Three-Way Smart Switches: Check the Wiring and Companion Rules

If two wall locations control one light, check the smart switch’s exact multi-location diagram before buying. Some models use existing mechanical controls, some require a brand-specific companion and others add a wireless remote. A single-pole-only switch is a different product.

This guide describes dated manufacturer information. It is not a wiring procedure or confirmation that a particular box, load or circuit is suitable.

Models with documented mechanical-control routes

[GE Cync Matter paddle dimmer](/products/ge-cync-paddle-dimmer-matter) documents single-pole, three-way and four-way operation through traveler wiring, with neutral and ground required. That does not establish zero extra installation work or compatibility with every existing switch and load.

Lutron Diva documents mechanical three-way options without a neutral. Claro DVRF-5NS also documents a mechanical three-way route but requires a neutral and provides on/off control, not dimming. Read their exact diagrams rather than transferring one model’s arrangement to another.

Leviton’s companion requirements

The discontinued D26HD dimmer uses Leviton DD00R wired or DAWDC wire-free companions. D315S uses the documented DD0SR or DAWSC companions. A second ordinary switch is not the specified route.

Count the required companion devices and verify the exact model and allowed number of control points. D26HD’s opt-in Matter firmware also removes its existing native HomeKit pairing, so a remaining-stock device’s firmware and connection need checking separately from wiring.

A wireless second control point

A Pico remote can pair directly to a supported Caséta device without a hub. Diva and Claro document up to ten Picos. The remote’s mounting accessories are separate, and pairing a remote does not install the main wired control.

Pico is not automatically a routine button for every platform. Its native Lutron control and Home Assistant trigger route have different requirements. See the Caséta explainer.

Inovelli Blue 2-1 documents multi-way configurations using a mechanical toggle, Inovelli Aux or another smart switch through Zigbee bindings. A supported Zigbee hub is needed for its smart features; no-neutral installation needs a fixture bypass. Do not reduce all its configurations to a brand-companion-only rule.

Single-pole models to distinguish

Kasa KS225 and Tapo S505 explicitly exclude three-way wiring in the cited documentation. Do not assume an app setting or Matter support changes the circuit requirement.

Also distinguish a fan-speed control, combined fan/light switch and lighting dimmer. Their load ratings and supported diagrams are not interchangeable simply because they fit a wall plate.

Check the whole installation

List every control location for the light. Confirm neutral, grounding, box space, load type and the exact supported diagram through the maker or a qualified installer. Colour alone does not identify the conductor function.

Count companions, remotes, hubs and installation work. Then use the checker for recorded platform support. It does not approve electrical compatibility. The no-neutral guide and switch directory cover the separate buying checks.
