Smart Switches for Homes With No Neutral Wire

If your wall box has no neutral wire, your list of smart switches gets short quickly, and it narrows in a direction most buyers do not expect. It narrows away from Wi-Fi and Matter, and toward a switch that speaks its own radio with a hub sitting behind it.

That is not a marketing quirk. A switch with no neutral has to keep a trickle of current running through the light circuit to power its own radio, and a power-hungry Wi-Fi chip is the wrong thing to run that way. So the no-neutral options are built around low-power radios, and low-power radios need something to talk to.

What our catalog can and cannot do without a neutral

Across every switch record we hold, three work without a neutral wire, and each asks for something in return.

Lutron Caséta Diva Smart Dimmer (DVRF-6L). Lutron’s support documentation states plainly that it requires no neutral wire and no bypass device either, which makes it the least conditional option here. Loads run to 150 W of dimmable LED or 600 W incandescent, and it is not rated for ELV or MLV fixtures. A Caséta Smart Hub is required for the app, schedules, scenes and every ecosystem connection. Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant arrive through it. Alexa and Google Home read unknown on this record as of August 2026. Not because they don’t work: the Lutron pages that would say so sit behind a bot wall, and we don’t publish a level we can’t cite. Without the hub it is still a normal wall dimmer, and it still pairs with up to 10 Pico remotes.

Lutron Caséta Wireless In-Wall Switch (PD-5WS-DV). This is the on/off sibling, and the interesting part is that Lutron recommends against it when you have a choice. Its own product-selection article says: “The PD-5WS-DV switch does not require a neutral connection. If a neutral connection is available in the wallbox, Lutron strongly recommends using the PD-5ANS / PD-6ANS where possible.” Lutron’s specification submittal describes it as a two-wire switch at 120/277 V with a 5 A switching capacity, and load limits vary by load type and by how many switches sit in one gang box. Some installations also need Lutron’s LUT-MLC load adapter, which is a second thing to buy and a second thing to fit.

Inovelli Blue Series 2-1 (VZM31-SN, $60). Inovelli describes a neutral as recommended rather than mandatory: a no-neutral install requires a bypass at the fixture, and Inovelli notes a bypass may also be needed on low-wattage loads if the lights flicker or the switch reboots. It is Zigbee, so a Zigbee hub is not optional. Inovelli’s own compatibility chart names SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant (ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT), Homey, and Echo models that include a Zigbee radio. Apple Home and Google Home households should look elsewhere.

Everything else in our switch catalog requires a neutral: the Kasa KS225 dimmer, Leviton’s Decora Smart Wi-Fi dimmer and switch, TP-Link’s Tapo S505, and Lutron’s own Claro DVRF-5NS. Lutron sells four non-dimming Caséta switches, and the PD-5WS-DV is the only one of them that skips the neutral.

The trend is going the wrong way for old wiring

The clearest evidence is GE’s Cync paddle dimmer ($25.99). Cync built a reputation on no-neutral Wi-Fi dimmers. The 2025 Matter refresh of that line requires a neutral and a ground, and our record states the consequence directly: the refresh dropped Cync’s no-neutral signature, so pre-1980s wiring is out. The older no-neutral Cync dimmers are still sold, and they carry no Matter and no Apple Home.

That pattern is worth holding onto when you shop. A newer, Matter-badged switch is more likely to demand a neutral than the model it replaced, because Matter here means Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi means power.

What this costs you in practice

The hub is the real price of a no-neutral house, and it is easy to under-count. A $60 switch that needs a hub is not competing with a $25.99 switch that does not. If you are wiring one room, the hub can cost more than the switches; across a whole house it stops mattering, which is why the no-neutral brands are also the ones that scale well.

The second cost is fixture access, and it only applies to the bypass route. A bypass lives at the light, not at the switch, so a 14-foot ceiling or a sealed enclosure turns a simple swap into a different job. Lutron’s Diva avoids that entirely, which is most of its appeal.

The third is narrower ecosystem choice. Caséta reaches all five platforms once its hub is in place. The Zigbee route reaches hub platforms and skips Apple Home and Google Home. Neither list is bad, but they are not the same list, so decide which platform your house runs on before you decide which switch to buy.

Before you order

Confirm the wiring rather than the house’s age. A neutral is usually visible as a bundle of white wires capped together at the back of the box, separate from the ones landing on the switch. If there is any doubt, confirm it with a qualified electrician. TP-Link’s own installation copy says the same, and it is the sentence to take seriously in a guide that cannot see your wall.

Then check the load. Every no-neutral option above publishes limits that ordinary neutral-fed switches do not have to think about, and dimmable-LED wattage is the one people hit first.

It installs at the fixture, not at the switch, which is the part worth planning for: it means access to the light itself, and on a high ceiling or a sealed fixture that is a real constraint. Inovelli's Blue Series 2-1 needs one for a no-neutral install, and notes a bypass may also be needed on low-wattage loads that flicker or reboot the switch.

Can I get a Matter switch without a neutral wire?

Not from any record in our catalog today. Every Matter or Wi-Fi switch we hold requires a neutral, and GE's Cync line is the clearest illustration: the Matter refresh dropped the no-neutral capability the older Cync dimmers were known for. Those legacy no-neutral models remain on sale, but they carry no Matter and no Apple Home.

Do the no-neutral switches still work if the hub fails?

As switches, yes. Lutron's Caseta Diva keeps working as an ordinary wall dimmer with no hub present, and pairs directly with up to 10 Pico remotes. What you lose without the hub is the app, the schedules, the scenes and every ecosystem connection. Inovelli's Blue Series is a working wall switch too, but all of its smart behaviour is Zigbee, so a dead hub leaves you with a switch.
