Lutron Caséta vs TP-Link Kasa: The Hub Question Decides It (2026)

Caséta vs Kasa looks like a brand choice. It’s actually an architecture choice, and your walls have already voted. The two systems disagree about three physical things: whether a hub sits between the switch and your phone, whether the switch box needs a neutral wire, and what happens on circuits with two switches. Every one of those disagreements comes straight from the vendors’ own documentation in our records.

The architectural split

Caséta is radio-first. Every Caséta device speaks Clear Connect, Lutron’s proprietary RF protocol: the Diva dimmer, the in-wall switches, the fan control. Nothing talks to your WiFi directly. The separately sold Smart Hub is mandatory for app control, voice, scheduling, and scenes. It’s also where the ecosystem support comes from: through that hub, our records show full support across Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant for the Caseta switches we’ve sourced. That includes the Diva dimmer, whose Alexa and Google Home cells read unknown for part of August 2026 while we had no citable Lutron page and now read full again. The upside of the extra box: dozens of switches don’t crowd your router, and the wall controls keep working like ordinary switches when the internet doesn’t.

Kasa is hubless. The KS225 dimmer joins your 2.4 GHz WiFi directly and adds Matter on top, and it reaches the same five ecosystems with no Kasa hardware in between. Read that precisely: our record has Matter as the Apple Home route and TP-Link’s own integrations as the route to Alexa, Google and SmartThings, and the Apple route still needs an Apple home hub. The trade rides your router: every switch is another WiFi client, and the whole system leans on that one network.

The wall decides more than the brand does

The wiring facts run in opposite directions, and neither is a small print item:

  • Caséta’s signature is no neutral. The Diva requires no neutral wire and no bypass device, per Lutron’s support documentation, and the PD-5WS-DV is the one Caséta on/off switch built for no-neutral boxes. That makes Caséta the practical option in a lot of pre-1980s housing, the same story our no-neutral guide tells across the whole catalog. One honest wrinkle from Lutron itself: where your box does have a neutral, its product-selection article points you at the neutral-wired PD-5ANS/PD-6ANS models instead of the no-neutral switch.
  • Kasa requires the neutral. Both the KS225 and the KS240 fan-and-light switch state “Neutral Wire Required: Yes” in their datasheets. Check the datasheet rather than the product page — the KS225’s page doesn’t mention the neutral at all. No neutral in the box, no Kasa; there’s no workaround.

Multi-location, the quiet dealbreaker

If one light is controlled from two switch locations, the comparison may already be over. The Kasa KS225 is single-pole only: TP-Link’s datasheet states it is “not compatible with 3-way (multi-location) wiring,” a limit its product page leaves out entirely. Caséta handles the same situation two ways: the Diva works in wired 3-way circuits, and a Pico remote can be the second control point with zero wiring, which Lutron documents as its standard 3-way answer. If your house runs two ecosystems

Plenty of households are not on one platform. An Apple Home phone, an Echo in the kitchen, someone’s Google speaker in the garage: that is a common shape, and it is where these two systems differ in a way neither product page mentions.

Caséta puts one box between your switches and everything else. Our records reach Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant through the Lutron Smart Hub, so adding a second ecosystem means linking that hub again rather than touching a single switch. Home Assistant is the exception worth noting, because its official lutron_caseta integration talks to the hub locally rather than through Lutron’s cloud.

Kasa has no single point to link, and the paths differ per platform. Our record has Alexa, Google and SmartThings arriving through TP-Link’s own integrations over its cloud, Apple Home arriving over Matter and needing an Apple home hub, and Home Assistant arriving through the official tplink integration locally. That is more moving parts, and it is also more independence: no one box can take the whole system down with it.

Neither shape is better. A household that dislikes an extra box and lives on Alexa will not miss the hub. A household running three ecosystems and wanting one thing to configure will.

Fit, not verdict

Choose on your constraints, in this order. No neutral wire at the switch: Caséta, and the comparison ends there. Any 3-way circuits you want smart: Caséta, wired or via Pico. Neutral present, single-pole circuits, and no appetite for a hub purchase: the Kasa KS225 reaches all five ecosystems with no Kasa hub to buy, though Apple Home users still need a HomePod or Apple TV for the Matter path. Fan-and-light on one wall plate: that’s the KS240’s specific job (with the same neutral requirement). Run your own switches through the compatibility checker before buying. Does Lutron Caséta need a hub?

For anything you'd call smart, yes. Caséta switches speak Clear Connect, Lutron's proprietary radio, and the separately sold Smart Hub is what translates that to your app, voice assistants, and schedules. Without the hub, a Caséta dimmer still works as a normal wall dimmer and can pair directly with up to 10 Pico remotes. It just isn't connected to anything else.

Does Kasa need a neutral wire?

The KS225 dimmer needs a neutral wire in the box, and so does the KS240 fan-and-light switch; TP-Link states it plainly in each switch's datasheet ('Neutral Wire Required: Yes'), though not on the product pages themselves. Older homes wired before the 1980s often don't have one at the switch, and there is no adapter that works around it. Caséta is the opposite: the Diva dimmer requires no neutral and no bypass device either, per Lutron's own support documentation.

Which one works with Matter?

Kasa's KS225 dimmer carries Matter over WiFi, and Matter is the route it takes to Apple Home. Alexa, Google and SmartThings are reached by TP-Link's own integrations rather than by Matter, per our record. One correction worth making plainly: the KS225 needs no Lutron-style hub of its own, but Apple Home over Matter still requires an Apple home hub — a HomePod or Apple TV — which our record states. Caséta has no documented Matter path at all; all five of its ecosystems arrive through the Lutron Smart Hub. Both routes end at full support in our records, and they get there differently.

Can either one do a 3-way (two switches, one light)?
