Guide
Can Alexa and Google Home Work in the Same House?
Yes. Many smart home devices link to an Alexa account and a Google Home account at the same time, so an Echo in the kitchen and a Google speaker in the living room can both switch the same lamp. The split comes with anything that belongs to one company’s system: the speakers themselves, each company’s own gadgets, and Zigbee devices you pair straight to an Echo’s built-in hub. Matter devices have a separate sharing route.
Matter lets one device join both apps, which helps. It doesn’t promise that both apps get the same features, and several products in our records show the gap.
Devices that link to both
Many devices that work with both do it through the maker’s own account. The Kasa EP25 plug is a typical case: TP-Link’s page names Alexa and Google Assistant on the same line, and the plug appears in whichever app you link it to.
A hub from a third maker can do the same for devices that can’t reach either assistant on their own. The Philips Hue Essential A19 bulb talks only Zigbee and Bluetooth. Once it’s on a Hue Bridge, Philips Hue lists both Alexa and Google Home for it, though it does not say which of the bulb’s controls each one gets. Gradients and dynamic scenes stay in the Hue app on both.
Where the two split
The speakers and screens pick a side
Amazon’s hubs don’t appear in Google Home, and Google’s don’t appear in Alexa. The Echo Hub runs its devices for Alexa, and Google Home has nothing to pair with. The Google Home Speaker is a hub for Google Home only, so Alexa has nothing to control.
Other makers sometimes choose too. The Sonos Era 100 has Alexa built in, and Google Assistant appears nowhere in its list of voice services. The First Alert SC5 smoke and CO alarm goes the other way: its pages name the First Alert app and Google Home, and not Alexa.
Each company’s own gadgets
Amazon’s own devices stay on the Alexa side. Amazon’s launch announcement for the Amazon Smart Plug names only Alexa, and we have found no page we can read that shows it in Google Home. The Amazon Smart Thermostat is set up in the Alexa app and documents no Google Home support. Ring publishes no Google Home integration for its doorbells, including the Battery Doorbell 4K Pro.
Some of Google’s own devices reach Alexa, with less. The Nest Doorbell (2K) works through Google’s Nest skill for Alexa: doorbell, motion and person announcements, talking to a visitor, and live view on an Echo with a screen. Google also says some Nest features can’t be controlled from Alexa, and live view from a wired doorbell stops after 12 hours. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) connects to Alexa over Matter, through a Matter-capable Echo, and Alexa gets temperature and mode. The schedules and learning stay with Google.
An Echo does not share its Zigbee devices
Some Echo models are also Zigbee hubs. A Zigbee device that joins an Echo is run for Alexa, and the Echo doesn’t pass it on to other apps. The Inovelli Blue Series 2-1 switch shows the result. It’s a Zigbee switch that works with Alexa through an Echo with a Zigbee radio, and Inovelli lists Google as not compatible.
Compare that with the Hue bulb above. Both are Zigbee devices, and the difference is the hub they join. On a Hue Bridge, Hue lists the bulb for both assistants. On an Echo, a Zigbee device has no route to Google Home, and none of the Google hubs in our records lists a Zigbee radio of its own. Matter devices work differently.
Matter shares the device, not always the features
A Matter device can be shared between Alexa and Google Home, even one first paired to an Echo. Before counting on it, check what each app receives:
| Device | In Alexa | In Google Home |
|---|---|---|
| Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 | Motion only. Aqara says Alexa doesn’t support the light-sensor function. | Works, with a Google Thread border router as the controller. |
| Inovelli VTM36 fan and light module | Not compatible, per the page selling it, because Alexa doesn’t support Matter’s fan type yet. Inovelli’s own manual lists Alexa, so its two pages disagree. | Listed by Inovelli, with a compatible Google speaker or display. |
| Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | Setting the temperature and asking for the current one, per Amazon’s list for Matter thermostats. | Full, including learning. |
Thread devices bring one more requirement. For the Aqara P2, Aqara names an Echo that’s both a Thread border router and a Matter controller for Alexa, and a Google device such as the Nest Hub (2nd gen) for Google Home. Our Thread border router guide explains how to tell whether you already own one.
Same device, different depth
Linking to both doesn’t mean equal treatment. The eufy Video Doorbell E340 gives Alexa live view on an Echo Show. On Google, the documented function is voice-requested live view on a Nest Hub, with no two-way talk. Ring announcements remain unresolved: one eufy feature list advertises them, while its Google-specific instructions say live view only. The SwitchBot Presence Sensor reaches both through a SwitchBot hub, but SwitchBot says Google Home won’t let you use it as a condition in an automation.
Routines don’t cross over either. Each app runs its own, from the devices it can see, so a routine built in Alexa can’t start from a sensor that only reaches Google Home.
Which setup fits
Running both fits a household where people prefer different assistants, as long as most devices come from makers that link to both, or are Matter devices whose features you’ve checked on each side. A second assistant may provide a documented function unavailable on the first, like the Sonos Era 100 or the First Alert SC5.
Keeping to one assistant fits a home built around Amazon’s own gadgets, a Ring doorbell or Zigbee devices on an Echo, since none of those has a documented way into Google Home. The same holds for anyone who’d rather build every routine in one place. What changes the answer for any household is one device you care about that only one side supports fully, so check that device first.
The ecosystem guide compares the two in more depth, and the compatibility checker shows recorded support and limits for catalog products against the assistants you already use.
Frequently asked questions
Which Echo models have the built-in Zigbee hub?
Of the Echo models in our records, the Echo Hub, the Echo Show 8 (2025) and the Echo Show 11 list a Zigbee radio. The Echo Dot (5th gen) doesn't. None of the Google speakers or displays in our records lists one.
Will my Echo show up in the Google Home app?
No. An Echo is the Alexa side's own hub, so Google Home has nothing to add. The same goes the other way for a Nest Hub or a Google Home Speaker in the Alexa app.
