Smart Blinds and Curtain Motors: Check Fit, Hubs and Controls
Check what moves at the window before checking the platform badge. A chain motor, roller-tube motor, blind-tilt device and curtain driver are different installations. Measure the existing covering and confirm the exact motor configuration before ordering.
The table compares dated research records. It does not establish installation quality, motor reliability or that a retrofit is permitted or damage-free.

Zemismart MTP1 Matter over Thread Blind Driver — the catch, per ecosystem ~$69 Zemismart's own store listed $69.00 on 3 October 2026, under a 'Flash Sale' banner beside a struck-through $98.57 and a '-30%' label. It showed the same $69.00 with the same framing on 1 August 2026, more than 60 days earlier, so $69.00 is the price a buyer actually pays and the $98.57 is Zemismart's framing of an ordinary price, not ours. This is the price at time of research, never a live price.
Connection: Thread · Matter · Hub for full use: Yes (Yes, in the way every Matter-over-Thread device needs one, and Zemismart says so without saying what it means: 'Support Matter-cetified ecosystem via smart home hub' (the spelling is the vendor's). A Thread device is not reachable on its own - it needs a Thread border router to join the mesh and a Matter controller to commission and command it, and in most households one box does both. Zemismart does not name a single qualifying hub for this product, does not state a Thread version, and does not say whether its own M1 hub is required or merely one option. The 'Sub-device Work with M1 Hub' line that appears near this product is part of the site-wide Matter Solution navigation rather than the product's own copy, so it is not treated as an answer. The practical reading: if the household already runs the 2021 Apple TV 4K, the Wi-Fi + Ethernet 2022 model or a HomePod, a Google Nest hub, a SmartThings hub or an equivalent Thread border router, that is the hub Zemismart means. If it does not, one has to be bought, and Zemismart does not tell you which.) · Works offline: Not checked — we have not established whether this keeps working without the internet Full sourced profile for Zemismart MTP1 Matter over Thread Blind Driver →

SwitchBot Blind Tilt — the catch, per ecosystem ~$69.99 at time of research, SwitchBot's own store — the 1-Pack. Multi-packs are strict multiples with no bulk discount: 2-Pack US$139.98, 3-Pack US$209.97, 4-Pack US$279.96. A promotional banner ran on the page at the time of reading; the figures here are the listed prices, never treated as live.
Connection: Bluetooth · Hub for full use: No (Not for the blind itself, and yes for everything else. SwitchBot's listing describes local operation without a hub — 'When in Bluetooth range you can control up to 4 sets of blinds with one button through our app' — and then attaches every ecosystem to a hub purchase, naming two different hubs for two different jobs. For voice and third-party services: 'When paired with SwitchBot Hub Mini (sold separately), you'll be able to use smart assistants such as Alexa, Google Home and Siri to control your blinds remotely', and 'With SwitchBot Hub, you can also use voice commands via Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Siri Shortcuts, and IFTTT'. For Matter and Apple: 'With SwitchBot Hub 2 (sold separately), Blind Tilt supports Matter and can be integrated with Apple HomeKit.' The distinction is the buying decision — a Hub Mini reaches the voice assistants, but only the Hub 2 reaches Matter and Apple Home.) · Works offline: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network

Aqara Curtain Driver E1 — the catch, per ecosystem ~$89.99 at time of research, Aqara's US store — the listing's own 'From $89.99 USD' floor, which is the Track Version. The Rod Version is listed at $99.99 USD. The two versions differ only in what they mount to: Aqara describes the Rod Version as supporting 'all the types' while 'a more cost-efficient Track Version only supports U- and I-Rails'. Worth knowing if the cheaper number is what drew you: on 2026-09-18 Aqara's own store had the Track Version marked unavailable and only the Rod Version buyable, so the $89.99 floor was a price nobody could pay that day. Stock moves; the point is to check which version is actually in stock before budgeting from the lower figure. Never treated as a live price.
Connection: Zigbee · Hub for full use: Yes (Yes, and only an Aqara one. The device is Zigbee 3.0 with no Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth path and no Matter radio of its own, and Aqara's US store states the dependency twice over: 'An Aqara Hub is required and sold separately', followed by '(NOTE: Hubs from alternative brands are not compatible.)' Aqara's specification tab records the requirement as an 'Aqara Zigbee 3.0 HUB'. Hubs reported compatible on the store listing include the M2, M1S, M1S Gen 2, E1, Camera Hub G2H, G2H Pro and G3 — indicative rather than authoritative, since Aqara publishes no hub-by-hub compatibility matrix for this product. Which hub you buy is a live decision rather than a formality: Aqara's own footnote says 'Matter support may be unavailable by the time of the launch, and will be rolled out as an OTA update of a compatible Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub', so a Matter path through this curtain driver depends on the hub's firmware rather than the motor's.) · Works offline: Not checked — we have not established whether this keeps working without the internet

SwitchBot Curtain 3 — the catch, per ecosystem ~$89.99 at time of research, SwitchBot's own store — the U Rail 1-Pack. The rail type changes the price: Rod Type 1 is US$99.99 for one. Multi-packs are inconsistent about discounting — U Rail 2-Pack US$179.98 and 4-Pack US$359.96 are strict multiples, while Rod Type 1 2-Pack US$169.99 sits under a struck-through US$199.98 and the 4-Pack is US$339.98. That struck-through figure is exactly two singles, so the Rod 2-Pack is a markdown off the pack price rather than a standing bulk rate, and a buyer counting on it should check it is still there. An I Rail Accessory Kit is a separate US$9.99 purchase. Never treated as a live price.
Connection: Bluetooth · Hub for full use: No (Not for the curtain itself, and yes for every ecosystem. SwitchBot's listing describes app control directly and then puts the platforms behind a hub in two sentences that name two different hubs: 'With SwitchBot Hub, you can also use voice commands via Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Siri Shortcuts, and IFTTT', and 'With SwitchBot Hub 2 (sold separately), Curtain 3 supports Matter and can be integrated with Apple HomeKit. Control your curtains via the Home App or using your HomePod/Apple Watch.' As with the Blind Tilt, the Hub 2 is the one that carries Matter and Apple; a cheaper SwitchBot hub reaches the voice services only.) · Works offline: Not checked — we have not established whether this keeps working without the internet

RYSE SmartShade (Wired) — the catch, per ecosystem ~$149.99 at time of research, RYSE's own store, for the SmartShade (Wired) on its own. On 2026-09-20 the store's structured listing carries $149.99 against a struck-through $199.99 — a markdown that was not on the listing when this record was written on 2026-08-01, when $149.99 stood alone as the plain price. $149.99 is what a buyer pays either way. The number that matters to a buyer is still higher than this one: every ecosystem integration and every schedule runs through the RYSE SmartBridge, which is a separate product listed at $49.99 (reduced from $79.99 on the same page), so a shade that answers to Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home costs $199.98 at these prices. Never treated as a live price.
Connection: Bluetooth · Hub for full use: No (Not to move the shade, and yes for everything else people buy a smart shade for. RYSE's own description draws the line explicitly: on its own, the SmartShade 'converts your beaded-chained window shades into motorized shades, where you can open and close your shades via our mobile app or on-device buttons', over Bluetooth LE. Everything past that is gated on the RYSE SmartBridge, sold separately: RYSE lists 'With SmartBridge (additional purchase)' against creating 'routines or schedules', connecting 'with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa for voice control', and controlling 'multiple shades simultaneously (Groups) from the app'. The SmartBridge's own page repeats the boundary from the other side - it is 'Capable of connecting with up to 10 SmartShades and SmartCurtains at once' and 'enables many exciting features including group control, routines, and integrations with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit' - and adds a constraint the shade page does not mention: a stated range of '40ft from SmartShade'.) · Works offline: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network

Eve MotionBlinds Upgrade Kit for Roller Blinds — the catch, per ecosystem ~$169.95 at time of research, the Eve Store's own US figure — the listing reads 'from $169.95', and the from-price is the small-tube motor (25-30 mm), which Eve prices below the large-tube one in every currency it publishes. The large-tube motor (38-51 mm) costs more, and its exact current US price is NOT recorded: Eve renders per-variant prices client-side and the figure could not be read to the standard the rest of this record is held to. What is verified for that variant is Eve's own June 2024 US launch announcement, which put the Upgrade Kit at '$199.95'. Prices on the Eve Store display with a 'incl. VAT, plus shipping' notice inherited from its European storefront. Never treated as live.
Connection: Thread · Matter · Hub for full use: Yes (Yes, and it must do two jobs at once. Eve states the condition in this product's own requirements list: a 'Compatible hub with Matter Controller & Thread Border Router functionality', with its hub page named as the place to find the hardware that qualifies. This is the generic Matter dependency rather than a vendor lock-in — Eve sells no hub of its own and names qualifying hardware across six ecosystems, Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant and Homey, so the platform you already run decides the answer. Eve's own framing is that both jobs usually arrive in one box: 'each platform offers a selection of hubs combining these two functionalities in one device.') · Works offline: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network Full sourced profile for Eve MotionBlinds Upgrade Kit for Roller Blinds →

SmartWings Motorized Roller Shades 100% Blackout (Essential, Matter-over-Thread motor) — the catch, per ecosystem ~$179.99 at time of research — $179.99, the SMALLEST PURCHASABLE CONFIGURATION, read from SmartWings' own storefront structured data on 2026-08-17 (single 'Default Title' variant, in stock). ⚠ THIS IS A MADE-TO-MEASURE PRODUCT AND THE FIGURE MOVES A LOT: SmartWings' own pricing article says the final cost 'depends on shade type, fabric, valance, bottom bar, and motor type', and its own catalogue shows a sibling blackout roller listed at $339.86. ⚠ AND ONE THING THIS PRICE DOES NOT ESTABLISH, stated rather than glossed: whether the Matter-over-Thread motor is included at $179.99 or is a paid upgrade within the configurator. SmartWings' structured data carries one price for the whole configurable listing, and the motor selection happens downstream of it — so treat $179.99 as the entry point for the FABRIC, not as the price of a Matter shade. The standalone Matter motor sells for $164.90, which suggests motor choice carries real cost, though that SKU is for retrofitting an existing shade and does not prove the upcharge on a new order. Never treated as a live price.
Connection: Thread · Matter · Hub for full use: Yes (Yes, for the configuration this record covers. The Matter-over-Thread motor needs a Thread border router in the house — a Thread-capable Apple TV 4K, HomePod, Echo, SmartThings hub or equivalent — before any app or platform can reach the shade; Thread does not route to the internet on its own. ⚠ AND THE BIGGER POINT, because it is decided at checkout rather than after: the motor is a dropdown, and it changes this answer completely. SmartWings also sells Zigbee and Z-Wave motors (which need a hub speaking that protocol — SmartThings, Home Assistant or Hubitat), and a remote-only path with no hub and no app at all. So the same shade name can be hub-free, Thread-dependent or Zigbee-dependent. Decide the motor before the fabric.) · Works offline: Not checked — we have not established whether this keeps working without the internet

SwitchBot Roller Shade — the catch, per ecosystem ~$199.99 at time of research, SwitchBot's US store — the S size (22.8"–31.5"). The ladder runs M $219.99, L $259.99, XL $309.99, and the optional solar panel is $29.99 on its own or bundled at $229.98/$249.98/$289.98/$339.98. Those are the listed prices and every one of them held on a full re-reading of the store. A 28% discount code was running across the whole size ladder at the time of that reading, which is a promotion rather than a price change — the listed figures are what this record carries, and nothing here is ever treated as a live price.
Connection: Bluetooth · Hub for full use: No (Not for the shade itself, but yes for every ecosystem. The motor is Bluetooth, and SwitchBot's own sentence for what it does on its own is 'Control blinds via app, voice, remote, or wired controller', with group control 'for up to 8 blinds per group'. Everything beyond that sits behind a SwitchBot hub, and SwitchBot puts the condition in the heading rather than the small print: 'Matter and smart home integration (SwitchBot Hub 2 required)', followed by 'Compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri Shortcuts, and more'. Its own integration section repeats it: 'With SwitchBot Hub 2 (sold separately), Roller Shade supports Matter and can be integrated with Apple HomeKit.' Which hub matters, and on this page it is always the Hub 2 by model — a cheaper SwitchBot hub is not what these sentences promise. Home Assistant is the one route that needs no hub at all. ⚠ SwitchBot used to publish a specification table on this page carrying the radio version, a range figure and a longer list of platforms, and it is no longer there. What a buyer can check today is the wording above.) · Works offline: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network

Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1 — the catch, per ecosystem
Connection: Zigbee · Hub for full use: Yes (Yes, and an Aqara one specifically. Aqara states the requirement on both surfaces that describe the product: the global page footnotes the smart-automation section with 'A compatible Aqara hub is required', and the US specification sheet answers its own 'Hub Required' field with 'Yes (Aqara Zigbee 3.0 HUB)'. The device is Zigbee 3.0 with no Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth and no Matter radio of its own, so there is no route to it that bypasses a hub. Aqara publishes no hub-by-hub compatibility list for this model - the word it uses is 'compatible', which leaves the buyer to establish that their specific hub qualifies. This record does not import the hub list from the Curtain Driver E1's store listing, because that list is published for a different product.) · Works offline: Partly — some of it keeps working without the internet and some of it does not

Lutron Serena Smart Shades — the catch, per ecosystem
Connection: Clear Connect · Hub for full use: Yes (Yes for everything except the handheld remote. The shade's own radio is Lutron's, not anyone else's: the specification submittal states 'Built-in wireless communication using Clear Connect-Type A RF technology' with a 'Wireless control range: 30 ft (9 m)', and lists exactly three compatible controls — 'Pico wireless control', 'Caseta Smart Hub' and 'Caseta Smart Hub PRO'. A Pico remote talks to the shade directly and needs no hub. Everything else does. Lutron's support documentation puts it plainly: 'These shades can even be controlled from anywhere in the world using the Lutron App and a Smart Hub (formerly Smart Bridge) or Main Repeater.' So the app, schedules, scenes and every ecosystem in the matrix below arrive through the Caseta hub, and the matrix is really the hub's matrix with a shade attached to it.) · Works offline: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network

Match the mechanism and dimensions
RYSE SmartShade uses a specified #10 bead chain and has stated shade-size/load limits. Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1 uses supported bead chains. Neither is a universal motor for cordless or spring-loaded blinds.
Eve MotionBlinds Upgrade Kit fits inside supported roller tubes. Its different motor sizes have separate tube and minimum-width requirements. A matching product name is not enough without those measurements.
SwitchBot Blind Tilt rotates horizontal slats; it does not raise the blind. Curtain 3 has rail/rod variants, and Aqara Curtain Driver E1 has its own track and rod exclusions. Confirm the precise mounting type.
Zemismart MTP1 claims broad fit but does not publish the dimensions or load rating needed to settle a particular blind. Ask before planning around it rather than filling that gap from the Matter badge.
Count the equipment for your chosen function
A nearby Bluetooth app route on RYSE or SwitchBot is different from voice, remote access and platform connections. RYSE needs its SmartBridge for the documented platforms. SwitchBot’s recorded Apple/Matter routes specifically name Hub 2; do not assume every cheaper or newer hub substitutes.
Both Aqara E1 motors use an Aqara hub for their maker-documented platform routes. Lutron Serena can use direct Pico control, while app and platform functions use a supported Caséta hub. Exact position control is unconfirmed on several voice/home platforms.
Eve and Zemismart use Matter over Thread, with a suitable controller and Thread border router. That is different from a proprietary hub and does not mean no equipment is required.
Do not transfer functions between configurations
SmartWings roller shades offer Matter/Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave and remote-only motors. This record covers the Matter configuration. Home Assistant is not established for that motor even though SmartWings names it for other configurations.
Home Assistant’s official SwitchBot integration documents the Blind Tilt, Curtain 3 and Roller Shade through Bluetooth without a SwitchBot hub. The Home Assistant machine still needs working Bluetooth within range. A hub-free route is not zero additional equipment in every home or proof of every maker’s certification.
Lutron’s Home Assistant support is documented by Home Assistant, not a Lutron product-page endorsement. RYSE and Aqara Roller E1 have unresolved Home Assistant scope. Read the exact product condition instead of claiming the whole category reaches every platform.
Check charging, outage behavior and lifecycle
Maker battery claims depend on configuration and use. Confirm the power method, charging access and what continues without internet. Eve documents on-device schedules; that does not establish the same behavior for every Thread shade or curtain motor.
IKEA FYRTUR remains for existing owners, but IKEA says it no longer sells smart blinds. Direct bundled-remote control is documented; the reviewed evidence does not settle third-party platforms. A discontinued sales line is not proof that the blind has stopped functioning.
For rented property, confirm the exact change and mounting permission. The renter guide does not guarantee a deposit outcome. Use the checker for recorded connections, and resolve fit and required unknown functions before buying.
Frequently asked questions
Can any retrofit motor fit my existing blind?
No. Chain, roller-tube, tilt and curtain motors do different jobs. Confirm dimensions, load, rail type and exact configuration before buying.
Does Bluetooth control mean every platform needs no hub?
No. A nearby app route differs from voice and platform access. SwitchBot’s documented Apple route names Hub 2, while its Home Assistant Bluetooth route has separate range and hardware requirements.
Does a made-to-measure shade name settle connectivity?
No. SmartWings offers different motors under one shade name. Its record here covers Matter over Thread; Zigbee, Z-Wave and remote-only options have different conditions.
