Aqara vs Eve Sensors: Which Brand Fits Your Smart Home

If you run Apple Home, Eve’s sensors give you something Aqara’s don’t: a record of when a door opened and how long it stayed open, with no account and no Eve cloud. That history only shows up in the Eve app connected through Apple Home. On Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings or Home Assistant, Eve’s sensors report the plain state and nothing more. So the choice turns on what Aqara offers and Eve doesn’t: a radar presence sensor, low-cost Zigbee sensors, and hubs of its own.

For door and motion sensors, the two brands now build the same way. The Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2, the Eve Door & Window, the Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 and the Eve Motion all use Matter over Thread. None of the four does anything until you own a hub that is both a Matter controller and a Thread border router. A HomePod mini, a Wi-Fi and Ethernet Apple TV 4K, a Nest Hub (2nd gen) or a newer Echo can fill that role.

What Eve’s extras depend on

Eve is plain about the limit. Features such as history “are currently not supported by all platforms”, and on anything other than Apple Home its sensors behave as standard Matter sensors: open or closed, motion or no motion. If nobody in the house uses an iPhone, you get Eve’s hardware and privacy position without the app features that set it apart.

The privacy position is the part that holds everywhere. Eve’s pages for both sensors state no subscription, no registration and no Eve cloud. Our records don’t establish whether Aqara’s two Thread sensors need an Aqara account, so that comparison stays open.

Two practical details are easy to miss:

• Updates need an Apple device. Eve’s documented firmware and Matter upgrade process calls for an iPhone or iPad. An Eve app for Android has existed since 2023, but Eve doesn’t clearly say whether it can install updates.
• One model number covers two units. Eve’s earlier Door & Window (2020) and Motion (2022) advertise Bluetooth and Thread, with a Matter update available. The 2023 version of each ships with Matter under the same model number. Old stock may need that update before it pairs as a Matter sensor.

What Aqara adds, and what it asks of you

Aqara’s two Thread sensors come with their own gaps. Aqara’s listing says the Aqara Home app doesn’t yet support the door sensor, with an update planned. On the motion sensor, Aqara says Alexa doesn’t receive the light reading, and adjusting sensitivity or how long it waits before reporting no motion needs an Aqara hub.

The wider range is where Aqara separates from Eve:

• Radar presence. The Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 detects people who are sitting still, over Wi-Fi rather than Thread. It needs constant USB-C power and an Aqara account, and its detection zones are drawn in the Aqara app. Our records show it fully on Apple Home and Home Assistant, partly on Alexa and Google Home, and with no official SmartThings listing. We have no Eve presence sensor in our library.
• Zigbee sensors behind an Aqara hub. The Aqara Water Leak Sensor needs an Aqara hub and an Aqara account, and the hub you pick decides where it can go. Only a hub that passes Zigbee devices on over Matter brings it to SmartThings, Google Home or Home Assistant. Aqara lists those as the M2 on post-2023 firmware, the M3, the M100 and the G5 Pro. The sensor itself has no buzzer, so the alarm sounds at the hub rather than at the leak.
• Hubs. The Aqara Hub M100 is a Matter controller, a Thread border router and a hub for Aqara’s own Zigbee devices. Aqara says automations for Zigbee and Matter devices run on your home network, while push notifications still need its cloud.

Eve’s range has a boundary of its own. The Eve Room and Eve Water Guard speak Apple’s HomeKit over Thread and hold no Matter certification. Eve names only Apple for the Room, and our records leave the other four platforms unknown. One caveat on the Room: Eve has stopped selling it. Its product page now redirects to Eve’s homepage and the monitor is gone from Eve’s store and product menu, so it belongs here as a comparison rather than as something to go and buy. Eve’s support page for it is still up, which is where what we know about it now comes from. For the Water Guard, Google Home has no route — Eve states the control path as the Eve app, the Home app and Siri, and nothing else — while Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant remain unknown. Eve’s own Matter upgrade page lists eight products, the Water Guard isn’t one of them, and Eve says it has no timeline to share. “Eve works with everything” holds for its Matter sensors, not for the whole catalogue.

How long each maker commits to updates

Aqara has signed UK compliance statements giving a security-update support period that runs to 31 December 2026 for the door sensor, the motion sensor, the Hub M100 and the Hub M3. For the door sensor, a second Aqara document gives an earlier date, 30 June 2026. Our records hold no published support end date from Eve for these sensors. Neither brand’s documents in our records say what changes for a working sensor once its support period ends.

Which one fits your home

• An Apple Home household that wants door or motion history fits Eve, provided a HomePod or Thread-capable Apple TV is already in place. You get the history, no account and no Eve cloud.
• A home on Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings gets plain open, closed and motion states from both brands’ Thread sensors. The deciding facts become price, battery type and the Alexa light-reading gap on Aqara’s motion sensor.
• A home that wants presence detection, leak sensors or many inexpensive sensors fits Aqara’s range better, with the hub decided first, since the hub sets which platforms the Zigbee sensors reach.
• A household with no iPhone or iPad should weigh Eve’s update process before buying, because Eve documents it only for Apple devices.

The answer changes most with the hub you already own. If you have no Thread border router yet, neither brand’s door or motion sensor will work until you add one. That makes an Aqara hub a reasonable buy if Aqara’s Zigbee sensors are in your plans.
