Door sensor automations: check the trigger before buying

A door sensor automation needs three supported parts: the sensor’s open/closed reading, your platform’s trigger or condition, and the action you want. Seeing the sensor in an app is only the first check.

A light turning on when a cupboard opens and a phone notification when a door stays open are different tasks. Write the task down before choosing the sensor or hub.

MYGGBETT can pair directly with up to ten IKEA smart products without a hub. That does not provide the phone notifications of a connected setup. It is indoor-only, and its rechargeable AAA battery is sold separately.

SwitchBot connects this sensor to Alexa and Google through a hub, but says neither supports its light and motion features. Whether either receives the open/closed state is unconfirmed, because SwitchBot’s voice-alert sentence names no assistant. SwitchBot’s documented SmartThings route exposes open/closed state and battery level and supports routines. Apple gets open/closed state through a Matter-bridging Hub 2, Hub 3 or Hub Mini Matter Enabled. Check bridge capacity: Hub 2 lists eight secondary devices; Hub Mini Matter Enabled lists four.

Home Assistant’s official SwitchBot Bluetooth route exposes open/closed state, motion and battery without a SwitchBot hub. The computer running Home Assistant needs working Bluetooth.

Platform support is a second question

Apple, Google, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant publish automation tools with different conditions. The platform documentation linked below describes those tools; it does not establish that every sensor can supply every trigger.

Check both sides: the product page’s exact reading and the platform’s current automation requirements. For remote alerts, also check which parts require internet access and whether your phone can receive the notification.

Before relying on it

Follow the sensor’s mounting and alignment instructions. Check that opening and closing produces the expected state, then check the action and any delay. Repeat with the door left open and with the conditions your automation uses.

A contact sensor reports door state; it does not establish that a lock is secured or replace an alarm system. Use the checker to compare the documented routes before purchasing.

Frequently asked questions

Can every connected door sensor trigger an automation?

No. First confirm that your platform receives the open/closed reading from the exact model, then check that its automation tools accept that reading as a trigger or condition.

Can SwitchBot Contact Sensor work without a SwitchBot hub?

Nearby Bluetooth functions can. Home Assistant also has a local Bluetooth integration. Remote notifications and voice platforms require a SwitchBot hub, with specific models needed for Matter.
