Robot vacuum cameras: where images go and what remains unknown
Before buying a camera-equipped robot, check what the camera does and where its images can go. Obstacle detection, pet monitoring and support uploads have different data paths. A privacy headline does not settle all three.
Compare the exact claims
| Model | Recorded camera function | Limit of the published claim |
|---|---|---|
| Dreame X60 | Camera-based obstacle recognition | Dreame says recognition runs on the robot with no image storage in the cloud; that does not settle transmission |
| Matic | Camera-based navigation | Its home-only data headline has voice-processing and authorised-support qualifications |
| Roborock Z70 | Camera functions and an arm | Roborock says camera functions default to off and require permission; check the actual settings |
| Dreame L50 Ultra | Remote pet monitoring and two-way voice | Its security-certification claim concerns that feature, not a guarantee about the whole robot |
| SwitchBot K20+ Pro | Camera-head remote viewing | The reviewed page does not settle image handling; check the chosen camera kit separately |
Matic describes on-device intelligence, but spoken requests go to Google’s Gemini after the wake phrase. Its help centre also allows audio/video collection for support with explicit authorisation. Those qualifications belong beside the product-page headline.
Remote viewing necessarily sends a picture to a phone outside the home. It does not, by itself, establish how long an image is stored, which servers carry it or who can access it. Ask those questions before enabling the feature.
Dated findings are not model-wide verdicts
The records cite a joint Korean government assessment published in September 2025. Narwal, Dreame and Ecovacs were named for authentication weaknesses, and all assessed manufacturers submitted improvement plans. The finding is dated and its model scope matters.
Do not transfer a brand finding to Narwal Flow 2 or Ecovacs T80S OMNI as a proven defect in those models. The Dreame camera-activation finding concerned X50 Ultra, a different robot from the models compared here.
Roborock was not named among the three authentication findings, but was also not one of the two manufacturers singled out for stronger practice. That does not establish its safety. SHWF has not performed a security test.
Check the app as well as the robot
The Dreame records cite CISA advisory ICSA-25-219-06 about certificate validation in the Dreamehome app. The recorded affected versions are iOS 2.3.4 and earlier and Android 2.1.8.8 and earlier. Read the advisory and manufacturer remediation guidance through the record’s sources; a higher version number alone is not an independent security assessment.
Update commitments also need exact scope. Roborock publishes a minimum two-year rule without a Z70 end date. SwitchBot publishes a two-year rule, but its policy and example dates do not support calculating a precise K20+ Pro end date. The other listed models lack a recorded dated support promise.
Before enabling a camera
Confirm remote-viewing controls, storage location, retention, account access and support-upload permission. Check whether the function can be disabled and whether disabling it changes navigation or cleaning. A missing camera description in a record is not proof that the robot has no camera.
Use the robot directory for platform research, and read the exact model’s sources for privacy and security claims. Treat an unanswered question as unresolved rather than filling it with reassurance.
Frequently asked questions
Does on-device processing mean images never leave home?
Not necessarily. Processing, transmission and cloud storage are separate questions. Check the precise claim, including remote-viewing and support exceptions.
Does a security certification guarantee privacy?
No. Match the stated certification to its feature, model and scope. SHWF records the claim but has not independently assessed the robot’s security.
