Hubs & Controllers that work with Home Assistant: the 20 that do, and what each one can't do

20 of the 29 hubs & controllers in our library work with Home Assistant: 9 for everything they list, and 11 with an exception named on each. Every one of them is listed here with the catch that applies on Home Assistant specifically — the setup it needs, what stays stuck in the vendor's own app, and where Home Assistant's automations can't reach a capability the device has.

Work for everything they list

  1. Aqara Hub M100

  2. Philips Hue Bridge

Home Assistant's own Philips Hue integration connects to the bridge over your home network and controls the lights, motion sensors, remotes and switches paired to it. Its documentation notes that the older round V1 bridge is end of life at Signify; this page is about the current square bridge.

  3. SwitchBot Hub 3

Named directly by SwitchBot, on the same line and by the same mechanism as Apple Home: 'Bridge your SwitchBot devices to Apple Home or Home Assistant with Matter'. That is unusually explicit — most vendors on this shelf leave Home Assistant unmentioned — though as with Apple, what crosses over is bounded by what Matter's device types can express, not by what the SwitchBot app can do.

  4. Aqara Hub M3

The official path is Home Assistant's Matter integration consuming the M3 as a Matter bridge — Aqara is a Works with Home Assistant partner for Matter, and there is no dedicated Aqara-hub integration in HA core. Same bridge limits apply (not all Zigbee types exposed, one IR AC), and initial hub setup still happens in the Aqara Home app.

  5. Lutron Caséta Smart Hub

Home Assistant's own Lutron Caséta integration names this hub, the L-BDG2-WH, as supported and talks to it over your home network. Pairing needs either a press of the button on the hub or certificate files generated from your Lutron account.

  6. Home Assistant Green

This IS Home Assistant. The Green is Ethernet-only with no built-in radios, and the radio maths is the part that decides your real budget: the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 ($49) does Zigbee OR Thread — Home Assistant states plainly that it 'cannot do both Zigbee and Thread simultaneously' and that they 'strongly recommend dedicating a device to each protocol'. So a house that wants both needs TWO ZBT-2s, and Z-Wave is a third stick on top. The ZBT-1 (formerly SkyConnect) is discontinued and superseded by the ZBT-2. Home Assistant's own Green page still marks Thread on this adapter as under development.

  7. Sonos Era 100

Home Assistant's core sonos integration is classified Local Push — control over your LAN, not a cloud round-trip — at Bronze quality. One honesty note: HA's page scopes the integration to 'your Sonos wireless speakers' as a line, rather than naming the Era 100 specifically; the Era 100 is squarely that, but the statement is brand-scoped.

  8. SwitchBot AI Hub

⭐ The most unusual claim on this shelf, and it goes well beyond a bridge: SwitchBot says the device 'supports optional installation of Home Assistant directly on the device'. That is Home Assistant RUNNING ON the hub rather than talking to it — which, if it holds, makes this a Home Assistant box you can buy pre-built. SwitchBot also names Frigate AI compatibility and 'NVR-level security' alongside its support for standard camera streams. ⚠ We record this from SwitchBot's own words with nothing from the Home Assistant side to confirm it: we read no Home Assistant documentation naming this device, and 'optional installation' is doing real work in that sentence. Treat it as the maker's claim, not a verified way of setting it up.

  9. Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway Max

The Home Assistant route here comes from the Home Assistant side rather than from Ubiquiti. Home Assistant's official UniFi Protect integration carries its top quality rating and runs entirely on your own network with no round-trip to anyone's servers and no waiting for it to check, the top of both scales it is measured on. It says it 'supports all UniFi OS Consoles that can run UniFi Protect', which is what this box is, and it brings in the cameras, floodlights, sensors, chimes, sirens and the recorder itself, with live streams, motion and object detection, event notifications and recorded footage. ⚠ Two conditions Home Assistant states outright: only UniFi Protect running on a UniFi OS console is supported, and 'Home Assistant requires UniFi Protect 7.2.105 or later', with early-access builds explicitly unsupported and liable to break. So keep this box off the early-access channel if Home Assistant is part of the plan.

Work, with an exception

  1. YoLink Hub

Works per the maker; details unconfirmed

YoLink lists Home Assistant among the platforms its hub works with. It does not say how the hub connects to Home Assistant, so whether it keeps working when the internet is down is unknown, and it does not say what Home Assistant can do with YoLink devices.

  2. Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen, 2022 release)

    Partial

Home Assistant's alexa_devices integration (🏆 Platinum quality, Cloud Polling) names 'Amazon Echo Dot' in its supported list and controls it as a media/notify device — routines, media player, announcements, do-not-disturb, lists. Partial rather than full because the surface is scoped and the path is Amazon's cloud with app-based multi-factor login, polling every five minutes by default.

  3. Google Home Speaker (2026)

    Partial

Media and broadcast control from HA via the official core Google Cast and Google Assistant SDK integrations. Its Thread border-router role exposes nothing to HA — Thread devices reach HA only by joining HA's Matter integration directly via multi-admin.

  4. Google Nest Hub (2nd gen)

    Partial

Chromecast is built in, so Home Assistant can cast dashboards and media to the display. There is no Google-documented Home Assistant control path, and the Thread border router is bound to Google's Matter fabric. This level rests on the Chromecast spec line, not on any Google statement about Home Assistant.

  5. IKEA DIRIGERA Hub

    Partial

No dedicated core integration exists for DIRIGERA (HA's TRÅDFRI integration covers only the old gateway and says so). Home Assistant's own page names two ways in: its HomeKit device integration, and its Matter integration taking DIRIGERA in as a Matter bridge (bridge support since hub firmware 2.615.8, September 2024) for the bridged device types HA's docs list. The hub's own HomeKit pairing is reported retired for new setups in IKEA's late-2025 move to Matter, so the Matter route is the one recorded here; a fuller-featured community integration exists outside official support.

  6. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi

    Works, except bridged devices

Home Assistant has an official Apple TV integration and states it works with any generation, so you can control playback, send remote presses and type into search boxes from Home Assistant. What you do not get is the part this profile is about: the home-hub and Matter-controller roles stay inside Apple's platform, and Home Assistant cannot borrow them. Home Assistant runs its own Matter controller instead. Home Assistant treats the Apple TV as a media player and remote, not as a hub for the accessories it serves in Apple Home.

  7. Amazon Echo Show 11 (2025)

    Partial

Home Assistant lists Echo Show among the devices its Alexa Devices integration supports, so you can control the screen itself — play media, trigger Alexa routines, restart it, and read temperature and light sensors where the display reports them. Signing in needs an Amazon account with app-based two-step verification. What you cannot reach is the smart home behind it: the Echo brings Matter accessories into Alexa and does not pass them back out, so Home Assistant sees the display, not the devices Alexa controls.

  8. Google Nest Hub Max

    Partial

One direction only, and it is worth being precise about which. Google's spec row for this model includes 'Chromecast built in', which is what Home Assistant's Cast integration talks to — so Home Assistant can push dashboards and media TO the screen. It cannot drive the device's smart-home side: Google documents no Home Assistant control path, and the Thread border router is bound to Google's own Matter fabric rather than shared. Anyone buying a display specifically to be a Home Assistant control surface should understand they are buying a cast target.

  9. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet

Its own documentation notes a real consequence of mixing the two — updates it pushes to Thread accessories can fail when the only border router in the house is an Apple one. Home Assistant treats the Apple TV as a media player and remote, not as a hub for the accessories it serves in Apple Home.

  10. Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2

    Partial

Home Assistant's official SmartThings integration connects through Samsung's servers, not over your own network. Home Assistant warns that free access ends in October 2026. To keep it working you will need Samsung's $4.99 a month personal plan, or you will need to move your Zigbee devices off this hub.

  11. Aeotec Smart Home Hub (SmartThings Hub v3)

    Partial

The official integration runs through Samsung's servers rather than over your own network, and it needs a Samsung account. Home Assistant's own documentation warns that free outside access to SmartThings is being phased out from October 2026: to keep this working you will either pay Samsung's $4.99/mo Personal Plan, or move your Zigbee and Z-Wave devices off this hub before then.

If your home isn’t only Home Assistant
