Security+ 3.0: check the white learn button

Illustration of two garage openers, one with a yellow learn button and a wired controller attached, one with a white learn button and the same wire refused

A white learn button is a reason to stop and check compatibility before buying a garage controller. It identifies Chamberlain’s Security+ 3.0 generation in the documentation reviewed for our records. Several established retrofit controllers explicitly exclude it.

What changes for a retrofit controller

Earlier controllers use the opener’s wall-button connection for commands or data. Security+ 3.0 changes accessory communication to encrypted Bluetooth, with a paired wall control. The familiar terminals do not establish that an earlier controller can use them.

ratgdo32, Konnected GDO blaQ and Tailwind explicitly state that they do not support this generation. There is no documented firmware fix for those exclusions. That is a current compatibility limit, not a prediction about every future product.

Match the model as well as the colour

Yellow generally indicates Security+ 2.0, but ratgdo documents the 8500/8500C jackshaft family as an exception using Security+ 1.0. Its status connection also has wall-control requirements. Read the exact model’s instructions rather than treating colour as the whole installation test.

The B4643T manual identifies that opener as Security+ 2.0. That does not establish compatibility for every controller or for a different opener with a similar name.

OpenGarage’s documented workaround

OpenGarage describes connecting to the button contacts of a spare remote already paired with the opener. The remote sends the command instead of the controller communicating directly with the opener.

The documented limits matter:

  • The remote leg sends commands without receiving feedback.
  • OpenGarage’s independent ultrasonic sensor can still report door position.
  • The setup gives up the opener’s light sense/control and richer Security+ state reporting.
  • It uses a spare remote and is not a formally supported combination in the products’ compatibility statements.

This is a documented workaround, not a promise of manufacturer-approved installation. Follow the published instructions and resolve any installation or safety questions before using it.

Questions that remain open

Chamberlain’s recorded Smart Garage Control compatibility article does not address Security+ 3.0. Do not infer that its retrofit works simply because the opener has the same brand.

SwitchBot’s kit uses a contact-closure relay, which suggests a conflict with this generation, but SwitchBot publishes no explicit Security+ 3.0 exclusion in our record. Remootio 3 also leaves the generation unanswered. Neither is an established workaround.

Before ordering

Find the exact opener model and learn-button colour, then ask the controller maker to confirm that combination. Check the garage directory for the platform route separately: an opener connection does not establish Apple Home, Google Home or Home Assistant support.

Frequently asked questions

Does a white learn button rule out the controllers here?

Several makers explicitly exclude Security+ 3.0, including ratgdo32, Konnected GDO blaQ and Tailwind. Unanswered products should not be assumed compatible.

Does OpenGarage lose all door status with its remote workaround?

No. The remote link provides no feedback, but OpenGarage can still read position with its independent ultrasonic sensor. Opener light control and richer Security+ status are lost.
