Needs before it works: No hub. The door control module joins 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi directly and itself acts as hub for the wireless door position sensor, supporting up to three doors with additional sensors sold separately. 2.4 GHz only, and Genie is unusually explicit about it: 'Your door control module is only compatible on 2.4 GHz networks... The door control module is not compatible with 5 GHz networks.' FCC grant B8QALDCM authorises 2412–2462 MHz only, with no 5 GHz band on any filing, which independently confirms it. Bluetooth hardware is present in the FCC exhibits but no vendor document describes any Bluetooth control path, so its role is recorded as setup or internal sensor link with the exact function unknown. Every platform integration is cloud-to-cloud account linking; no local or LAN API is published.
Subscription reality
✓ Works without a subscription: Yes.
No subscription for core function, and Genie says so plainly: 'The Aladdin Connect app is free to use, with no additional fees or monthly charges!' Alexa, Google and SmartThings are all free. THE EXCEPTION IS THE HOME ASSISTANT PATH, and it is a real paid gate even though the money does not go to Genie: Home Assistant's own documentation states the integration 'requires an active Home Assistant Cloud subscription, since the integration authenticates through it'. So a Home Assistant household pays a recurring third-party fee to talk to a device the vendor otherwise gives away for free — an unusual arrangement worth naming rather than burying.
Maintenance reality
- Batteries: The door control module is mains-powered. The wireless door position sensor is battery-powered; Genie does not publish a battery life figure that could be verified.
- Cloud dependence: Yes — a server shutdown would degrade or brick this device
- Fully cloud-dependent. App control, voice control and remote status all fail without internet, and Genie's FAQ documents a flashing green light meaning the module reaches home Wi-Fi but cannot reach the cloud. No local or LAN API is published, and every integration routes through Genie's cloud. The physical wall button and RF remotes are unaffected. Whether any same-LAN fallback exists is UNKNOWN — Genie documents it neither way, so no claim of zero local fallback is made. SEVERAL THINGS ARE DELIBERATELY LEFT UNKNOWN rather than filled in from the old generation's material: the ALKT2-R2's box contents (the current product page still carries the previous wired kit's contents — a wire spool and insulated staples — while advertising wireless installation, so that text cannot be trusted for this SKU), and whether the existing 39279R sensor is cross-compatible with the new module given the wired-to-wireless architecture change. A naming discrepancy is also unresolved: Genie's store says ALKT2-R2 while Amazon's title says ALKT2-R, at the same price and description.
The catch
In January 2024 Genie replaced the Aladdin Connect cloud API and remotely disabled the old one. Users report their doors simply stopping in February 2024 without having changed anything at all — no app update, no new hardware, no action on their part. The Home Assistant integration broke, failed to load in Home Assistant 2024.7, and came back only under Genie's own control with a Genie employee as code owner and a requirement that you hold a paid Home Assistant Cloud subscription to authenticate. That is the shape of the risk here: not a vendor announcing it is dropping support, but a vendor changing its own plumbing and everything downstream falling over. It is also worth knowing that the widely repeated story about Aladdin Connect changing hands in 2023 is false — there was no sale in either direction, and Overhead Door has owned Genie throughout. What actually happened in that window was the API cutover, which is a better reason to be cautious than the imaginary one. Two smaller things: there is no Apple Home support and no evidence there ever was, despite frequent claims otherwise; and it is 2.4 GHz only, which Genie states explicitly.
Who it's for
Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings households wanting cheap retrofit garage control at $49.99, including on non-Genie openers — Genie names Chamberlain, LiftMaster, Craftsman, Linear, Marantec, Overhead Door, Stanley and Wayne Dalton, requiring openers made after 1993-01-01 with photo-eye sensors. It handles up to three doors on one module, which is unusual at this price, and Amazon Key In-Garage Delivery is well supported. It also documents the pre-close audible and visual warning that federal rule requires, which several competitors do not — a genuine point in its favour on a crushing-hazard device. It is the wrong buy for Apple Home households, who get Siri Shortcuts and nothing more. Wrong for Home Assistant users unwilling to pay for Home Assistant Cloud, since that is now the only sanctioned path. Wrong for anyone who needs local control or Matter, neither of which exists here. And wrong for a one-piece garage door, a pre-1993 opener, or a 5 GHz-only network.
