Needs before it works: No hub. The door control module joins 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi directly and itself acts as the hub for the wireless door position sensor: Genie's own installation steps pair a Door Position Sensor to the powered 'Door Control Hub', and Genie sells an 'Aladdin Connect Door Position Sensor (for 2nd and 3rd doors)' separately, so one module covers up to three doors. ⚠ Genie's own page also states 'The Door Position Sensor (ALDPS-R) is not compatible with this model.' — so at least one sensor part number in that family will NOT work here. Both statements are Genie's, on the same page; check the part number before buying a second or third sensor. 2.4 GHz only, and Genie is unusually explicit about it: 'Your door control module is only compatible on 2.4 GHz networks... The door control module is not compatible with 5 GHz networks.' Its FCC filing authorises 2412–2462 MHz only, with no 5 GHz band on any document, which independently confirms it. Bluetooth hardware appears in the FCC paperwork but no Genie document describes any Bluetooth control, so we record its role as setup or an internal sensor link with the exact function unknown. Every platform connection runs between Genie's servers and the platform's; nothing documents a way to reach it on your own network.^[16]

What it can do^[18]

• Home Assistant: Home Assistant's own integration page states there is "no position control. You can open or close the door, but you cannot stop it at a specific position", and that the integration is cloud-polling every 15 seconds with no local option — so door state can lag a real-world change by up to that interval.

Listed capabilities are what we could establish from vendor documentation. An ability missing here is unestablished — not necessarily absent.

No subscription for core function, and Genie says so plainly: 'The Aladdin Connect app is free to use, with no additional fees or monthly charges!' Alexa, Google and SmartThings are all free. THE EXCEPTION IS THE HOME ASSISTANT PATH, and it is a real paid gate even though the money does not go to Genie: Home Assistant's own documentation states the integration 'requires an active Home Assistant Cloud subscription, since the integration authenticates through it'. So a Home Assistant household pays a recurring third-party fee to talk to a device the vendor otherwise gives away for free — an unusual arrangement worth naming rather than burying.

Maintenance reality

• Batteries: The door control module is mains-powered. The wireless door position sensor is battery-powered; Genie does not publish a battery life figure that could be verified.
• Works without the internet: Not established — we have not sourced this yet. It does not mean the product fails without the internet.
• Everything about this opener runs through Genie's cloud. Lose your internet and the app, voice control and door status all stop — Genie's own troubleshooting describes a flashing green light for exactly that case, where the module still reaches your Wi-Fi but cannot reach Genie. Your wall button and RF remotes keep working normally. Genie never says whether anything keeps working over your home network alone, so we make no claim either way. Two details we could not settle from Genie's own material: what actually ships in the box for this model, and whether an older Genie door sensor works with the newer module.

Security updates^[20]

Genie publishes no security-update support date for this model. That is a gap in what the manufacturer has published, not evidence either way — some makers declare a support period and some say nothing at all.

Verified absence. Genie publishes Aladdin Connect support, FAQ and installation material and no security-update period, end-of-support policy or regulatory security declaration anywhere in it. Recorded as a checked absence on a garage-door controller, where the horizon question is the same as the myQ shelf's and gets the same silence. Recheck condition: a Genie security or compliance page, or a UK PSTI statement of the kind Chamberlain publishes for its European SKUs.

The catch

In January 2024 Genie replaced the plumbing behind Aladdin Connect and remotely switched off the old version. Users report their doors simply stopping in February 2024 without having changed anything at all — no app update, no new hardware, no action on their part. The Home Assistant integration broke, failed to load in Home Assistant 2024.7, and came back only under Genie's own control, with a Genie employee as its maintainer and a requirement that you hold a paid Home Assistant Cloud subscription to sign in. That is the shape of the risk here: not a maker announcing it is dropping support, but a maker changing its own plumbing and everything downstream falling over. It is also worth knowing that the widely repeated story about Aladdin Connect changing hands in 2023 is false — there was no sale in either direction, and Overhead Door has owned Genie throughout. What actually happened in that window was the changeover, which is a better reason to be cautious than the imaginary one. Two smaller things: there is no Apple Home support and no evidence there ever was, despite frequent claims otherwise; and it is 2.4 GHz only, which Genie states explicitly.

Who it's for

Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings households wanting cheap retrofit garage control at $49.99, including on non-Genie openers — Genie names Chamberlain, LiftMaster, Craftsman, Linear, Marantec, Overhead Door, Stanley and Wayne Dalton, requiring openers made after 1993-01-01 with photo-eye sensors. It handles up to three doors on one module, which is unusual at this price, and Amazon Key In-Garage Delivery is well supported. It also documents the pre-close audible and visual warning that federal rule requires, which several competitors do not — a genuine point in its favour on a crushing-hazard device. It is the wrong buy for Apple Home households, who get Siri Shortcuts and nothing more. Wrong for Home Assistant users unwilling to pay for Home Assistant Cloud, since that is now the only sanctioned path. Wrong for anyone who needs local control or Matter, neither of which exists here. And wrong for a one-piece garage door, a pre-1993 opener, or a 5 GHz-only network.

IMPORTANT METHOD NOTE: an initial read of the page reported 'Sold out' — that string is Shopify template boilerplate present on every product page on this store, and was refuted by the variant JSON and JSON-LD. The sibling StealthDrive 7155-TKV genuinely IS sold out despite a price rendering on its page, which is the inverse trap. The result was calibrated three ways: a negative control ('zzzqqqxyznotaproduct') returned No Entries Found, proving the filter rejects; a positive control ('Nanoleaf') returned only Nanoleaf products, proving the filter matches; and a query for 'Genie' returned ONLY 'Pin Genie, Inc. DBA Lockly' — a company whose name merely contains Genie — which a broken search could not produce. The registry's own company filter list of roughly 800 entries contains no Overhead, Genie or Aladdin. Zero CSA products of any kind (Matter, Zigbee, Aliro) from this manufacturer. DISCLOSED ANOMALY: multi-word queries returned loose token-OR matches with unrelated products and were NOT treated as evidence in either direction. ⊕ RE-RUN 2026-08-20 (BQ-212 tranche 2) — the entry's own control methodology, repeated through our fetch path, and the whole claim is re-verified rather than merely linked. `?p_keywords=Aladdin` returns "No Entries Found".
