Blinds, Shades & Curtains that work with Apple Home: the 10 that do, and what each one can't do

10 of the 11 blinds, shades & curtains in our library work with Apple Home: 9 for everything they list, and 1 with an exception named on each. Every one of them is listed here with the catch that applies on Apple Home specifically — the setup it needs, what stays stuck in the vendor's own app, and where Apple Home's automations can't reach a capability the device has.

Work for everything they list

  1. Zemismart MTP1 Matter over Thread Blind Driver

Named in both of Zemismart's own product enumerations - the description's 'works with HomeKit, Google Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant, and Homey' and the feature block's 'Supports HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings for easy remote & voice control' - and the mechanism is the one thing about this product that is not in doubt, because Matter over Thread is what the product is. Transport is recorded as local for the same reason: a Matter device commissioned to an Apple Home border router is controlled over Thread on the local network, not through a Zemismart cloud. One caveat belongs on this cell: Zemismart names Siri voice control, but Apple's own accessory list does not name this product. The Matter certification itself checks out, because the Matter certification ledger lists the MTP1 as certified.

Automations Apple Home's Matter page lists this kind of device; its automations can use Open/close.

  2. SwitchBot Blind Tilt

Reached only through the Hub 2, which SwitchBot names by model: 'With SwitchBot Hub 2 (sold separately), Blind Tilt supports Matter and can be integrated with Apple HomeKit.' A Hub Mini does not buy this cell even though it buys the voice assistants. Through the Hub 2, Apple Home tilts the slats and opens and closes them, as it does for Matter blinds.

Automations Apple Home's Matter page lists this kind of device; its automations can use Open/close and Tilt.

  3. Aqara Curtain Driver E1

The one platform every Aqara surface agrees on — named as 'HomeKit' on the product overview, 'Apple Home' in the compatibility section, and 'Apple Home' again on the US store. Reached through the Aqara hub, which is what actually appears in the Home app; no hub, no Apple Home. Aqara's example phrasing is its own: 'Hey Siri, open the curtain'.

  4. SwitchBot Curtain 3

Reached only through the Hub 2, which SwitchBot names by model: 'With SwitchBot Hub 2 (sold separately), Curtain 3 supports Matter and can be integrated with Apple HomeKit. Control your curtains via the Home App or using your HomePod/Apple Watch.' The claim rests on SwitchBot's word — no Apple document confirms what a bridged curtain motor exposes in the Home app.

Automations Apple Home's Matter page lists this kind of device; its automations can use Open/close and Position.

  5. Eve MotionBlinds Upgrade Kit for Roller Blinds

The only platform Eve gives extra features to. Eve names Apple TV 4K (2nd gen, and the 3rd gen Wi-Fi + Ethernet model), HomePod (2nd gen) and HomePod mini as qualifying Thread-and-Matter hubs. Adaptive Shading — schedules that track the position of the sun — runs from the Eve app on iPhone and iPad, not from Apple Home itself, and Eve does not offer it on Android.

Automations Apple Home's Matter page lists this kind of device; its automations can use Open/close.

  6. SmartWings Motorized Roller Shades 100% Blackout (Essential, Matter-over-Thread motor)

Named for the Matter-over-Thread motor, and it is the configuration with the fewest prerequisites for an Apple household: a HomePod, the 2021 Apple TV 4K or the Wi-Fi + Ethernet 2022 model is already the Thread border router the motor requires, so there is nothing extra to buy. As with the others, SmartWings claims the platform without listing which capabilities travel.

Automations Apple Home's Matter page lists this kind of device; its automations can use Open/close.

  7. SwitchBot Roller Shade

Reached only through the Hub 2, and SwitchBot ties this one to that hub by name: 'With SwitchBot Hub 2 (sold separately), Roller Shade supports Matter and can be integrated with Apple HomeKit.' A cheaper SwitchBot hub does not buy this one. The claim rests on SwitchBot's word — no Apple document confirms what a bridged shade exposes in the Home app.

Automations Apple Home's Matter page lists this kind of device; its automations can use Open/close and Position.

  8. RYSE SmartShade (Wired)

Works only through the RYSE SmartBridge, sold separately. Apple's own list of accessories for the Home app places the 'RYSE Smart Bridge' among its bridges: accessories the Home app connects to directly, which bring the devices behind them into the app. RYSE's pages say the same from their side, naming Apple HomeKit only under 'With SmartBridge (additional purchase)'. Apple lists the bridge rather than the shade, and neither Apple nor RYSE says which of the shade's controls show up in the Home app.

  9. Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1

Named on both Aqara enumerations - 'Apple HomeKit' on the global product page, 'Apple Home' on the US specification sheet. Reached through the mandatory Aqara hub, which is the device that actually appears in the Home app; no hub, no Apple Home. Aqara names no mechanism beyond the hub dependency, so the transport is not guessed.

Work, with an exception

  1. Lutron Serena Smart Shades

    Works; position unconfirmed

Works only through the Caseta Smart Hub, sold separately. Apple's own list of accessories for the Home app includes 'Serena Motorized Shades by Lutron with Caseta Wireless bridge' under window coverings, and Lutron says the hub lets you use Siri to control your shades. Position is unconfirmed in Apple Home: neither Apple nor Lutron says whether you can set the shade to a chosen height there. Buy the shade without the hub and it cannot join Apple Home.
