When a smart home service ends: what can remain usable

Illustration of two smart devices cut off from a darkened cloud, and two more still linked to a small hub inside a house outline

A company ending sales, a cloud service closing and one integration being removed are three different events. Check which happened before deciding whether a device must be replaced.

The outcome depends on the exact model, setup history and function. These examples come from dated research records; they are not hands-on survival tests or new live checks of every service.

Sutro: a recorded whole-service shutdown

Sutro Pool Monitor is recorded as inoperable after its October 2025 service shutdown. No documented local fallback is established. The original shutdown notice was later unreachable, and the record keeps that evidence limitation visible. See the Sutro guide before considering secondhand stock.

Wemo: different model and setup outcomes

Belkin’s Wemo notice ended the affected cloud/app/voice services on 31 January 2026. Certain Wi-Fi models already set up in Apple Home can retain that control. First-time setup of affected Wi-Fi stock is unavailable; the Thread WSP100 is listed separately as unaffected.

That distinction matters more than the brand on the box. Home Assistant’s post-shutdown result remains unknown in our record. The Wemo guide sets out the exact limits.

Sengled: service withdrawal without a clear company notice

The Sengled Matter bulb record documents prolonged service and storefront losses without a company shutdown notice. Its Matter setup goes to the user’s controller rather than a Sengled account.

Do not turn that route into a guarantee. Internet-outage behaviour is unconfirmed, and forward support, firmware and warranty availability are not established. Other Sengled bulbs use different routes; a Matter bulb’s answer does not establish that every Wi-Fi or Zigbee model survives.

Sense: sales ended with an existing-owner commitment

Sense announced that monitor sales would end by 31 December 2025 and separately promised continued data access, support, app/firmware updates and security patches for existing owners. Our record’s review is dated 4 October 2026.

No end date is attached to the service commitment. The monitor’s appliance-recognition function depends on Sense’s servers, so the promise and the dependency should be read together. Documentation for an integration is not, by itself, proof that a live service was tested.

A removed feature is not always a closed company

WaterGuru lost its Google conversational integration when Google retired that feature class. Its recorded service remains operating. The lost voice route does not establish that chemistry readings ended or that all other integrations work.

Four questions before buying

  1. How is it set up? Check account, app, controller and firmware requirements. An account alone does not establish the control path.
  2. Which functions are local? Distinguish nearby control, automations, remote access and history. Matter or Zigbee does not guarantee every feature’s survival.
  3. What support commitment applies? Match the model, region and conditions. IKEA’s policy for GRILLPLATS is conditional on its own hub setup; do not extend it to every Matter controller.
  4. Can history and settings be retained? Check export options and storage location before an app or service becomes unavailable.

If a service has already ended, read the notice before resetting a working device. Confirm any replacement’s exact route in the checker, including required hardware and unresolved functions.

Frequently asked questions

Does local control guarantee survival after a company closes?

No. It can remove the maker’s cloud from a particular command path, but setup, firmware, app history and other features may still depend on the maker.

Does a company ending sales mean my device stops working?

Not necessarily. Sales and service are separate lifecycle questions. Read the exact product notice and any support commitment.
