Compatibility
| Ecosystem | Support | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa | WorksWorks with this ecosystem[6][10][11] | No Alexa-specific listing exists; coverage rests on IKEA's blanket statement of compatibility with smart systems from Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung, via standard Matter with a Thread border router on that platform.Setup path: Thread border router required — IKEA names its DIRIGERA hub as one option · Matter controller requiredIn Amazon Alexa you also need: a Thread border router · a Matter controller · a Ikea hub |
| Google Home | WorksWorks with this ecosystem[8][10][11] | Same basis: IKEA's blanket Matter-systems statement naming Google; no Google-specific listing. Thread border router on the Google side required.Setup path: Thread border router required — IKEA names its DIRIGERA hub as one option · Matter controller requiredIn Google Home you also need: a Thread border router · a Matter controller · a Ikea hub |

| SmartThings | WorksWorks with this ecosystem[9][10][11] | Same basis: IKEA's blanket Matter-systems statement naming Samsung; no SmartThings-specific listing. | Home Assistant | WorksWorks with this ecosystem[5][10][16] | IKEA does not name Home Assistant. The path is HA's official Matter integration (local push), which supports certified Matter devices generically; there is no IKEA-specific listing on either side.In Home Assistant you also need: a Thread border router · a Matter controller · a Ikea hub |
Protocols: MATTER · THREAD[2][13][19]
Needs before it works: Matter controller plus a Thread border router before phone or app control works. IKEA's stated example is its DIRIGERA hub; per IKEA's compatibility statement, equivalent Matter systems from Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung apply, using that platform's own Thread border router. There is a hub-free path, but it excludes the hub path rather than supplementing it: IKEA's manual states the plug 'can be either paired directly to each other or connected to the IKEA Home smart system or any other system that uses the Matter standard. Only one connection method can be used at a time.' Direct pairing tops out at 'a maximum of 10 plugs from IKEA… with one remote control or motion sensor'.[3][12]
What it can do[20]
You can tell it to
- On/off
- Energy monitoring
It reports
- Energy reading
Whether each platform's automations and routines can use it — not just whether its app shows it.

Listed capabilities are what we could establish from vendor documentation. An ability missing here is unestablished — not necessarily absent.
Subscription reality[1][11]
✓ Works without a subscription: Yes.
Vendor account required: Not established — we have not sourced this yet.
No subscription referenced on the IKEA US product page, IKEA's smart-product support policy, or the launch press release; IKEA Home smart app features are described with no paid tier.
Maintenance reality[4][12][14]
- Works without the internet: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network. A vendor cloud may still be involved in remote access.[14]
- Matter over Thread runs locally; IKEA's support policy states smart products keep working, including on local networks without internet, after software support ends. Bluetooth is the commissioning radio (CSA cert). Energy monitoring is stated on the US page and in the CSA cert description. A separate Zigbee 3.0 certification exists for the same hardware family, but IKEA's US page documents no Zigbee pairing path, so it is not listed as a protocol. North American electrical ratings, from IKEA's own US manual (type E2491-NA): input 120 V~ 50/60 Hz, max output 1800 W / 15 A resistive, and a MAX 300 W MOTOR LOAD — a much lower ceiling than the resistive figure, and the one that governs anything with a compressor or motor. Wireless: 2402–2480 MHz at 10 dBm EIRP, 10 m range in open air. Operating temperature 0–40 °C (32–104 °F); IKEA states the plug shuts itself off if ambient temperature exceeds its operational limit and comes back when it cools. IKEA also warns not to connect plugs 'after each other in a sequence'. Support duration: at least 5 years after purchase per IKEA policy, conditional on pairing with a DIRIGERA hub or TRADFRI gateway; duration when used only with a third-party Matter controller is not addressed by the policy.
- Security updates: IKEA states its security-update commitment for this model as a period rather than a date: software support for at least five years after purchase, which is IKEA's stated policy for its smart products as a class and which IKEA writes as conditional on the plug being paired with a DIRIGERA hub or a TRÅDFRI gateway; the five years count from each owner's purchase date rather than from a launch date, so no single end date exists for this model, and the same policy commits to a minimum of three years after purchase for the hub or gateway itself (the document this comes from names no country, so which markets it legally covers is not stated). That is a floor measured from a starting point the manufacturer sets — a launch or a purchase — rather than a fixed end date, so it cannot be placed on a calendar here. We record the commitment as the manufacturer states it, in our words, rather than converting it into a date it did not give. This is a published commitment, not a gap in our research.[22]
The catch
Matter over Thread only: without a Thread border router (DIRIGERA or another platform's) a phone cannot control it. Two limits IKEA prints in the manual but not on the product page: the plug can be paired directly to an IKEA remote or joined to a smart system, not both — 'only one connection method can be used at a time' — and its 1800 W rating is resistive, with a maximum 300 W motor load, so a fridge, pump or compressor is out. IKEA states blanket compatibility with Matter systems from Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung rather than publishing per-platform listings.
Who it's for
Households already running a Thread border router in any Matter ecosystem who want a low-cost plug with energy monitoring, and anyone who wants a lamp or fan switched by an IKEA remote or motion sensor with no hub or app at all — but those are two different setups, not one, because the plug does direct pairing or smart-system control, never both at once.

The sentences taken off the page: 'We will offer support on smart products from IKEA for at least five years after purchase, if paired with DIRIGERA hub or TRÅDFRI gateway to ensure that your smart products from IKEA: Works with applicable IKEA Home smart app. Gets security updates.' The same page sets a separate floor for the hardware those products pair with: 'We will offer support for a minimum of three years after purchase, to ensure the hub / gateway: Works with the IKEA Home smart app / IKEA Home Smart 1. Gets security updates. Gets updates to ensure compatibility with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant.' Both windows are measured from the purchase date rather than from a launch date. On what happens afterwards: 'Yes! You can continue to use your smart products from IKEA even after the end of our software support. For example, you will still be able to turn your lights on and off, take your blinds up and down and use the hub / gateway on your local network even without an internet connection.' The policy defines the class it covers: products marked 'Works with IKEA Home smart' are 'smart products from IKEA that can be controlled with an applicable app if paired with DIRIGERA hub or TRÅDFRI gateway'.
