Rachio and B-hyve: controller, timer and hub differences

Illustration of two sprinkler controllers side by side, one linked to a detailed command list and the other to a short one-line label

First decide whether you need an in-ground sprinkler controller or a hose-tap timer. Then compare the exact bundle and the function your platform can use. A shared brand name does not establish equal support.

In-ground controllers

Rachio 3 documents Alexa on/off, zone watering and rain skips. With Google Home, Rachio documents starting and stopping watering on every active zone; choosing a single zone by voice is described only for Alexa. Its SmartThings description names the platform without establishing the same controls.

Orbit B-hyve XR connects to Alexa through the B-hyve skill. Orbit’s Alexa command list, which includes watering a numbered station and stopping, is filed under a different B-hyve controller and does not name the XR. Google is named without a command list. Zone control and on/off remain unconfirmed on both voice routes.

Rachio suspended Rachio 3 HomeKit support in October 2022; its refund programme closed in September 2023. That recorded removal is different from a current Apple claim. XR also has no established Apple route in its record; a Matter certificate for an unrelated company using the Orbit name is not evidence for it.

Hose timers: check the box contents

Rachio Smart Hose Timer includes a Wi-Fi hub. The valve talks to that hub over Bluetooth, rather than providing a direct phone-to-valve control path. Walls and appliances can reduce the published hub range.

Orbit XD 24639 includes a hub. XD 24634 does not. The timer has on-device and nearby Bluetooth programming; remote and weather features need the hub setup. Do not borrow the bundled model’s platform answers for 24634.

Rachio stores up to 400 run events on the valve, which can continue without internet under the stated conditions. That is not 400 days for every schedule, and it does not establish remote access during an outage. The valve must not be exposed to freezing temperatures.

Voice routes have specific limits

Rachio’s hose timer documents opening, closing and state queries with Alexa and Google, through the hub. The device must be owned by the linked account, not merely shared with it. Siri Quick Run uses Shortcuts; it is not a valve in Apple Home.

Orbit’s bundled XD documents an Alexa skill with watering commands and a one-device-per-account limit. Its Google instructions use wording associated with retired conversational Actions, so that route remains unknown. The XR’s shorter voice statement does not establish all of the XD commands.

Home Assistant support

The official Rachio integration covers controller functions and hose-timer valves. It uses the cloud, with documented internet-reachability requirements for real-time updates. Rachio and Home Assistant disagree on eight versus four valves per hose-timer hub; confirm the capacity for your setup before expanding.

XR has an unendorsed community route, and no official B-hyve integration is established. Hose-timer support must be confirmed separately rather than inherited from the controller.

Before buying

Confirm the valve/controller fit, wiring or tap requirements, hub placement and exact command. Check local watering restrictions and any rebate eligibility with the relevant authority before including them in a purchase calculation.

Rachio 3 states no monthly app fees. Orbit’s records find no required plan, which is not a lifetime commitment. Use the yard directory and checker to compare the documented requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Are the two B-hyve XD four-outlet listings the same bundle?

No. The recorded 24639 bundle includes the hub; 24634 does not. Remote and weather features have additional hub requirements.

Does Rachio’s official Home Assistant integration work locally?

No. It uses Rachio’s cloud. Real-time updates require Home Assistant to be reachable through the documented method.
