Recorded on absence rather than on a promise, and the absence is unusually clean: a full-text read of Orbit's product page returns zero occurrences of 'subscription', 'plan', 'membership', 'premium' or any recurring-fee language, and the one thing the page does say about cost of ownership is that 'B-hyve App is free and available on iOS or Android through the App Store or the Google Play Store'. No advertised feature is gated. What Orbit has not done is publish a commitment that current features stay free, so this is recorded as 'no subscription exists today' rather than as a guarantee.

It also states 'Dual Wi-Fi signals deliver a strong, consistent signal so you can make changes to your watering schedule from anywhere with your smartphone' and 'The 8 or 16 zones and support for wireless valves make it easy to add that extra drip zone for the garden.' It depends on Orbit's servers: nothing documents a way to control it on your own network alone.

The catch

The most useful thing about this controller is a fact Orbit puts in a bullet and most buyers skim past: it is EPA WaterSense labelled, and the page says so twice, noting the label 'qualifies it for rebates in many cities and water districts'. On a $169.99 device a municipal rebate is a large fraction of the price, and it is the single most consequential thing to check before buying. Second, this is the one controller in this group genuinely designed to live outdoors — 'Engineered for indoor or outdoor locations with exposure to elements', with a lock-out to stop passers-by pressing buttons and a 'lights-off stealth mode' so a glowing box on an exterior wall does not advertise itself. Those are not features a garage-mounted controller needs, and they tell you what Orbit expects. Third, the smart-home story is thin and stated in eight words: 'Integrates with Google and Alexa smart home control.' That is the entire claim on this model's page. The page has no command list (Orbit's general Alexa guide has one, but it does not name the XR), nothing about whether voice can run one zone or only the whole system, and nothing at all about Apple, SmartThings, Home Assistant or Matter — a full read of the page returns zero occurrences of every one of those. For Apple that is a genuine no: there is no HomeKit route and no Matter certificate under either the B-hyve or Orbit names. Fourth, Home Assistant is not established: Home Assistant documents integrations for competitors Rachio and Hydrawise and none for Orbit, and the community add-ons that exist are supported by neither Orbit nor Home Assistant. Finally, the pricing is clean: no subscription language appears anywhere on the page, and the B-hyve app is stated to be free.

Who it's for

A fit for someone whose controller has to mount outside — weather-rated, tamper-locked, and with a stealth mode for the glow, at meaningfully less than the alternatives here. It is a rebate candidate too: the WaterSense label is stated first-party and many water districts pay against it, which can move the real cost a long way. It suits an Alexa or Google household that wants scheduling and app control and is content with basic voice, and it suits anyone with a mixed valve setup, since Orbit states compatibility with 24 VAC valves from other major brands. It is the wrong controller for an Apple household — no HomeKit, no Matter, and Orbit names two platforms and excludes Apple from the list. Look elsewhere if you want documented voice capability rather than an eight-word claim; Rachio publishes what its Alexa integration actually does and Orbit does not do so for this model. And treat the Home Assistant path as a project rather than a feature: it exists, but as a community add-on neither Orbit nor Home Assistant supports.
