Every advertised feature — scheduling, weather-based rain, freeze and wind skips, zone control, the voice integrations — is described without a paywall. Recorded as a positive 'none' rather than as an absence, because the vendor makes the claim in its own words rather than merely staying silent about it.
Maintenance and offline use

Installation replaces an existing 24 VAC sprinkler controller and Rachio advertises it as taking '30 minutes or less with no special tools'; it is still mains wiring at a fixed outdoor or garage location, which is why this record is diy-wiring rather than no-install. It is cloud-operated, and that is the honest headline: there is no documented local control path of any kind.

The catch
Start with Apple, because it is why most of what you will read about this controller is out of date. The Rachio 3 shipped in 2018 with HomeKit support and was sold on it; Rachio suspended that support indefinitely in October 2022, saying it could not find the cause of persistent 'No Response' errors, and offered to refund the full purchase price to anyone who wanted to switch to a competitor. It closed that refund programme on 2023-09-29. Its own product page today names five integrations and mentions Apple, HomeKit and Siri exactly zero times. We could not confirm a Matter certificate for Rachio either, and for an Apple household this is not a partial or awkward fit, it is a no. Second, the platforms that do work are not equal, and the vendor's own page shows the gap without commenting on it: Alexa gets a documented capability list — on, off, running individual zones, setting rain skips, 'more than 100 different commands' — while Google Home gets a single sentence about controlling sprinklers 'just by speaking' and SmartThings gets its name in a list ending 'and more'. Per-zone voice control is the feature that actually matters on an irrigation controller, and it is documented on exactly one platform. Third, everything here is cloud. There is no local way to control it, and the official Home Assistant integration — which offers per-zone switches and rain-delay control — is 'Cloud Push', meaning Home Assistant's own docs require your instance to be reachable from the internet before updates arrive in real time. Who it's for
The default recommendation for an Alexa household with in-ground sprinklers, and the one controller in this launch set where a buyer can find out what voice control actually does before buying it — per-zone runs and rain skips, documented by the vendor rather than implied. It suits someone replacing an existing 24 VAC controller who wants scheduling and weather skips with no ongoing fee, and it suits a Home Assistant user who is comfortable with a cloud integration and either runs Nabu Casa or already exposes their instance. It is the wrong product for an Apple household, without qualification: the HomeKit support it was sold with is gone, Rachio removed the marketing rather than quietly leaving it up, and there is no Matter replacement. Think twice if local control matters to you — there is no local path at all — and check the zone count you need, because Rachio's own store sells only the 8- and 16-zone sizes today even though its specification table still lists five.
