Needs before it works: For anything beyond the on-device display: a Matter controller plus a Thread border router — IKEA's page says you need a Thread Border Router to control it through your phone, its DIRIGERA hub the stated example. The press-to-read display itself works with no hub at all; CSA's product description confirms it functions as a standalone device or in a Matter network.^[1][7]

Maintenance reality^[4][7][9]

• Batteries: 2x AAA (HR03) 1.2V rechargeable — IKEA recommends LADDA; sold separately, not included — expect roughly 24 months per set
• Works without the internet: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network. A vendor cloud may still be involved in remote access.^[9]
• Matter over Thread runs locally; IKEA's support policy states smart products keep working, including on local networks without internet, after software support ends. Bluetooth is the commissioning radio (CSA cert). Battery life is IKEA's own published figure: '2 x new LADDA AAA HR03 batteries will power this sensor for about 24 months before they need to be changed' (IKEA US manual AA-2662110-1). It appears in the manual, not on the product page — this record previously recorded no battery life because only the page had been read. Note the figure is 24 months here and 15 for the MYGGBETT and MYGGSPRAY sensors; IKEA publishes them separately and this record does not average them. A red LED shows a low battery, and status also appears in the IKEA Home smart app. The on-device display reads temperature and humidity at a button press with no hub, and a slider inside the battery compartment switches °C/°F. Radio: 10 m range in open air, 2402–2480 MHz, 5 dBm EIRP. Operating temperature 0–40 °C (32–104 °F); IKEA states 'use only indoors' and limits mounting to heights up to 2 m. Support duration: at least 5 years after purchase per IKEA policy, conditional on pairing with a DIRIGERA hub or TRADFRI gateway; the policy does not address the term for Matter devices used only with a third-party controller.
• Security updates: IKEA states its security-update commitment for this model as a period rather than a date: software support for at least five years after purchase, which is IKEA's stated policy for its smart products as a class and which IKEA writes as conditional on the sensor being paired with a DIRIGERA hub or a TRÅDFRI gateway; the five years count from each owner's purchase date rather than from a launch date, so no single end date exists for this model, and the same policy commits to a minimum of three years after purchase for the hub or gateway itself (the document this comes from names no country, so which markets it legally covers is not stated). That is a floor measured from a starting point the manufacturer sets — a launch or a purchase — rather than a fixed end date, so it cannot be placed on a calendar here. We record the commitment as the manufacturer states it, in our words, rather than converting it into a date it did not give. This is a published commitment, not a gap in our research.^[19]

The catch

The display is the only thing that works hubless: press the button and it shows temperature then humidity, but app readings, automations, and every ecosystem require a Matter controller plus a Thread border router — and the two required AAA batteries are sold separately.

Anyone who wants a glanceable room thermometer that can later join a Matter ecosystem, and Thread-equipped households adding cheap temperature and humidity triggers for automations.
