Maintenance reality
- Batteries: AA x4 — expect roughly 18 months per set
- Cloud dependence: Yes — a server shutdown would degrade or brick this device
- Longest-lived battery of our locks — 4xAA alkaline rated ~18 months (Yale). Fully KEY-FREE: no physical keyway. Dead-battery backup is the exterior 9V terminal — hold a 9V battery to the two contact pads under the keypad to power it up long enough to enter your code. Low-battery: on-screen + app notice at 25%, then daily email/push as it drains. Ecosystem features ride Yale's Wi-Fi cloud (Yale Access), so a Yale-cloud outage degrades remote/voice control (the Apple Home Key tap itself is local NFC).
The catch
No Matter and no Thread — ecosystem reach rides Yale's Wi-Fi cloud; key-free, so the only physical fallback is the exterior 9V emergency terminal.
Who it's for
Apple households wanting Home Key tap-to-unlock with the longest battery life here; works for Alexa/Google/SmartThings on the Wi-Fi model.

Yale's Z-Wave-module page excludes the Plus (YRD450-N) from the swappable module bay, and every Plus page confirms Home Key + Wi-Fi with no Matter/Thread; Matter is a separate Yale SKU (Smart Lock with Matter, YRD510) that has no Home Key.
