Needs before it works: Matter controller plus a Thread border router before phone or app control works — IKEA's page states you need a Thread Border Router, its DIRIGERA hub the stated example. Per IKEA's compatibility statement, smart systems from Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung apply, using that platform's own Thread border router. A hubless path exists and IKEA's manual documents it: the sensor pairs directly to 'a maximum of 10 smart products from IKEA' by direct pairing.^[1][7]

Maintenance reality^[4][7][9]

• Batteries: 2x AAA (HR03) 1.2V rechargeable — IKEA recommends LADDA; sold separately, not included — expect roughly 15 months per set
• Works without the internet: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network. A vendor cloud may still be involved in remote access.^[9]
• Matter over Thread runs locally; IKEA's support policy states smart products keep working, including on local networks without internet, after software support ends. Bluetooth is the commissioning radio (CSA cert). IP67 rated — IKEA states it suits indoor and outdoor use. Battery life is IKEA's own published figure: '2 x new LADDA AAA HR03 batteries will power this sensor for about 15 months before it needs to be changed' (IKEA US manual AA-2664594-3). It appears in the manual, not on the product page — this record previously recorded no battery life because only the page had been read. ⚠ The same manual gives an operating temperature of 0–40 °C (32–104 °F), which is narrower than 'suitable for outdoor use' implies: an IP67 rating is about water and dust, not cold, and anywhere with a freezing winter falls outside IKEA's own stated range. IKEA also limits mounting to heights up to 2 m. Radio: 10 m range in open air, 2402–2480 MHz, 5 dBm EIRP. Detection range, angle and sensitivity are still not stated anywhere IKEA controls, so none are recorded; light-level sensing is not recorded either (the Matter cert's device type is occupancy sensor only, and IKEA's spec text does not claim it). A separate Zigbee 3.0 certification exists for the same hardware, but IKEA's US page documents no Zigbee pairing path, so it is not listed as a protocol. Support duration: at least 5 years after purchase per IKEA policy, conditional on pairing with a DIRIGERA hub or TRADFRI gateway; the policy does not address the term for Matter devices used only with a third-party controller.
• Security updates: IKEA states its security-update commitment for this model as a period rather than a date: software support for at least five years after purchase, which is IKEA's stated policy for its smart products as a class and which IKEA writes as conditional on the sensor being paired with a DIRIGERA hub or a TRÅDFRI gateway; the five years count from each owner's purchase date rather than from a launch date, so no single end date exists for this model, and the same policy commits to a minimum of three years after purchase for the hub or gateway itself (the document this comes from names no country, so which markets it legally covers is not stated). That is a floor measured from a starting point the manufacturer sets — a launch or a purchase — rather than a fixed end date, so it cannot be placed on a calendar here. We record the commitment as the manufacturer states it, in our words, rather than converting it into a date it did not give. This is a published commitment, not a gap in our research.^[19]

The catch

Matter over Thread only — without a Thread border router (DIRIGERA or another platform's) plus a Matter controller no phone can reach it, though IKEA's manual documents pairing it straight to up to ten IKEA products with no system at all. The two AAA batteries are sold separately (IKEA rates them at about 15 months), and IKEA still publishes no detection-range, angle or sensitivity figure anywhere. The outdoor claim needs reading carefully: IP67 covers water and dust, but IKEA's own operating range is 0–40 °C, so a freezing winter is outside spec — and it must be mounted no higher than 2 m.

Who it's for

Households already running a Thread border router in any Matter ecosystem who want motion-triggered automations at the lowest price in the category, and DIRIGERA homes pairing it directly with IKEA lights. Outdoors it suits sheltered, non-freezing spots — IKEA's IP67 rating covers water, but its stated operating range stops at 0 °C.
