The catch
It is the cheapest way into Alexa, and everything about it assumes you stay there: no Google, no Apple Home, and the Home Assistant path runs through Amazon's cloud with MFA. Two things the spec table says that marketing doesn't dwell on: Amazon Sidewalk — the neighborhood network that shares a slice of your bandwidth with other people's devices — ships on this device (it can be disabled in the app), and there is no Thread radio, so its Matter support is WiFi-only and Thread accessories still need a border router from somewhere else. The eero mesh-extender trick works only if your router is already an eero.
Who it's for
An Alexa household adding a room, or anyone's first smart speaker at $50 — the temperature and motion sensors quietly make it a room-automation trigger, not just a speaker. Not for Google, Apple-first, or cloud-averse homes.
