Maintenance and offline use
- Works without the internet: Not established — we have not sourced this yet. It does not mean the product fails without the internet.
- How this speaker is powered is not established on any Amazon page we may read, and Amazon does not say how it behaves without the internet. Its 2022 launch announcement says only that some of the most common requests to Alexa are handled on the speaker itself.
- Security updates: No security-update support date is on record for this model yet. We haven't yet checked whether Amazon publishes one, so this is a gap in our research — not a statement about the manufacturer.
The catch
It is the cheapest way into Alexa, and everything about it assumes you stay there: no Google, no Apple Home, and the Home Assistant path runs through Amazon's cloud with an app-based sign-in code. It has no Thread radio, so Thread accessories still need a border router from somewhere else. It can also extend an eero mesh Wi-Fi network by up to 1,000 square feet, but only if your router is already an eero.
Who it's for
An Alexa household adding a room, or anyone's first smart speaker. Amazon announced it at $49.99, and its temperature and motion sensors quietly make it a room-automation trigger, not just a speaker. Not for Google, Apple-first, or cloud-averse homes.
