Compatibility
| Ecosystem | Support | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | The natively supported platform — Amazon owns Ring — and Ring states Alexa integration is included at no monthly cost. |
| Google Home | Not checkedWe have not verified this yet — this is not a claim about the product | NOT ESTABLISHED. Ring's Google Assistant support has been widely reported as withdrawn, but no affirmative statement either way was found on ring.com or support.ring.com. Recorded as unknown rather than asserted from community reports. |
| Apple Home | Not checkedWe have not verified this yet — this is not a claim about the product | NOT ESTABLISHED. No Ring statement on Apple Home or HomeKit was found in primary sources. Community reports point to Homebridge as the only route, which is not a vendor-supported integration. |

| Home Assistant | Not checkedWe have not verified this yet — this is not a claim about the product | NOT ESTABLISHED. No Ring statement was found in primary sources within this research pass. |
? Not checked means we haven’t verified that ecosystem yet — it is a statement about our research, never a verdict on the product. A Setup Check can research it for you.

Subscription reality
◐ Works without a subscription: Yes, but material features need a plan.
- Free: Live View, Real-time motion alerts, Two-Way Talk, Customisable motion zones, Alexa integration
- Behind a plan: ALL cloud video recording — nothing is recorded without a plan, Cloud video history (up to 180 days), Snapshot Capture, Person / vehicle / package alerts, Extended and Multi-Cam Live View, Video Preview Alerts, Bird's Eye View, 24/7 recording (top tier) (from $4.99/mo)
- 5-year cost if you add the plan: ~$299 at $4.99/mo — price verified 2026-07-19
Tiers as of 2026-07-19 (ring.com/plans), after the 2026 rename from Ring Home to Ring Protect: Ring Solo $4.99/mo or $49.99/yr covers ONE device; Ring Multi $9.99/mo or $99.99/yr covers all devices at one location; Ring Pro $19.99/mo or $199.99/yr. Virtual Security Guard is $99/mo. The pricing field records the entry Solo tier. The decisive fact for a buyer: the free tier is real-time awareness only — live view, alerts and talk are free, but ZERO recording happens without a plan. A 30-day trial starts at device setup.
Maintenance reality
- Cloud dependence: Yes — a server shutdown would degrade or brick this device
- Hardwired or plug-in; there is no battery floodlight-camera SKU. Floodlight is adjustable 200-2000 lumens with an 85dB siren.
The catch
Live View, motion alerts and Two-Way Talk are genuinely free, which makes the no-subscription story sound better than it is: without a plan the camera records nothing at all. Every recording, and the 180-day history, sits behind Ring Protect. Note also that Ring's '4K' is its own term, 'Retinal 4K' (3840x2160), and that the plans were renamed from Ring Home to Ring Protect in 2026 — older comparisons citing Basic/Standard/Premium are out of date.
Who it's for
Alexa households wanting a bright, radar-equipped floodlight camera and willing to carry a subscription, since the device does not record without one.
