Compatibility
| Ecosystem | Support | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Works via Bridge or Bluetooth; Hue's Bluetooth guide states Bluetooth-only setups still get Alexa voice control. |
| Google Home | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Works via Bridge or Bluetooth; Hue's Bluetooth guide states Bluetooth-only setups still get Google Assistant voice control. |
| Apple Home | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Documented via the Hue Bridge. Hue does not state whether Apple Home works over Bluetooth alone, so the hubless path is unverified — assume the Bridge is needed. |
| SmartThings | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Listed by Hue as Samsung SmartThings, via the Hue Bridge. Hue does not document a Bluetooth-only path, so the hubless path is unverified. |
| Home Assistant | Not checkedWe have not verified this yet — this is not a claim about the product | Not listed by Hue. Home Assistant has a Hue integration, but this specific product was not verified against it during research. |
? Not checked means we haven’t verified that ecosystem yet — it is a statement about our research, never a verdict on the product. A Setup Check can research it for you.
Protocols: BLUETOOTH · ZIGBEE
Needs before it works: Not for basic use, but most of what buyers want it for needs a Hue Bridge. Over Bluetooth alone you get on/off, colour and basic automations, capped at 10 lights and roughly 30 ft of range with no remote access. The Bridge raises that to 50+ lights, whole-home Zigbee mesh, advanced routines and sync, and remote control. Hue also states that products connected via Bluetooth cannot be used with Matter — the Bridge is the only Matter path.
Subscription reality
✓ Works without a subscription: Yes.
No subscription language appears on the product page. Hue does sell subscriptions for its Secure camera line, which is a separate product family and does not apply here.
Maintenance reality
- Cloud dependence: No — core function survives without the vendor's cloud
- IP54 rated — dust-protected and splash-proof, per Hue's own wording. 65 ft cord, 3.15 in LED spacing, 14 W, 24 V via included supply on 100-130 V mains, 2000-6500 K, operating range -20 C to 40 C. Rated by Hue for indoor and outdoor use. Maximum 12 accessories with a Hue Bridge. Two-year warranty.
The catch
IP54 is splash-proof, not rain-rated — the lowest weather rating among comparable outdoor products, on something Hue markets for outdoor use. And nearly everything a buyer is likely to want it for — Matter, remote control, sync, or more than ten lights — requires a Hue Bridge purchased separately.
Who it's for
Households already running a Hue Bridge who want colour-gradient string lights that join an existing Hue setup cleanly. Workable Bluetooth-only for a small, in-range installation. Not a fit for exposed locations that see driving rain, or for anyone expecting Matter without a Bridge.
