What do you need to make it work?
No hub is needed for the light itself. Nanoleaf's specifications say it 'Works as a Thread Border Router', so a Skylight adds a border router that other Thread devices in the home can use. What it does need is wiring. Nanoleaf says the Skylight 'must be hardwired to your home's electrical system' and that 'Professional Installation strongly recommended'. Only the main controller panel is wired to the ceiling supply, and the other panels connect to it. Two limits are worth knowing before the ceiling goes up. It does not work with a wall dimmer: 'Skylight is not compatible with traditional wall dimmer switches.' And it needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, with '5 GHz not supported'. For Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings, Nanoleaf says no Nanoleaf hub or bridge is required. It does not say how the Skylight connects to them. Its Apple Home page recommends a HomePod or Apple TV for remote access and automations.[1][16][18][41]

Nanoleaf's product page names no plan, tier or fee, and it presents the Nanoleaf app as the way to control the light without marking any feature as paid. That is an absence of fee language, not a promise from Nanoleaf that the light will stay free of charges.
Maintenance and offline use[1]
- Works without the internet: Inconclusive — we read the vendor's own material and it does not answer this either way. It does not mean the product fails without the internet.
- Published specifications: 1400 lumens per panel, a white range of 2700 to 6500 K with RGBCW colour, 18 W at the controller panel and 16 W at each expansion panel, panels of 300 x 300 x 55 mm on a 120 x 120 mm mounting plate, flush ceiling mount, indoor use, IP20, rated for 25,000 hours. Nanoleaf covers it with a 2-year warranty and says it will replace a unit that develops a defect in normal use. On a plain wall switch it comes on at warm white and full brightness unless you change that in the Nanoleaf app. It does not work with a wall dimmer, and it needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Security updates: Nanoleaf publishes no security-update support date for this model. That is a gap in what the manufacturer has published, not evidence either way — some makers declare a support period and some say nothing at all.[28][51]
The catch
Two things set this light apart, and one of them is a warning. First, it gives something back to the house. Nanoleaf says it 'Works as a Thread Border Router', so a wired light in the middle of the ceiling also serves other Thread devices in the home. Second, the warning. Nanoleaf names Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings for the Skylight and does not say how the light connects to any of them. Its page for each platform says only that compatible products connect directly, with no Nanoleaf hub or bridge, after pairing in the Nanoleaf app. One route is ruled out: the product page says 'Matter Ready No' and 'Nanoleaf Skylight does not currently support Matter.' Nanoleaf's Matter page shows the Skylight in a grid of compatible products, but the same grid appears on its Thread page and its platform pages, and the Matter page tells buyers to check the product page, which says no. If you are buying this to put a ceiling into Apple Home or SmartThings, ask Nanoleaf what you need before paying an electrician. Third, the commitments you cannot undo. It is hardwired, and Nanoleaf says 'Professional Installation strongly recommended'. It will not work with a wall dimmer. It needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Fourth, the price is a starting price: three panels is a small light, and Nanoleaf supports layouts of up to 99 panels. Finally, Home Assistant's Nanoleaf integration lists the product lines it supports, and the Skylight is not among them.
Who it's for
The buyer already committed to a hardwired ceiling change — a renovation, a new fixture box, an electrician already booked — who wants a modular light that can grow across the ceiling rather than a single fixed panel, and who will run it mainly through the Nanoleaf app. It also fits a household building out Thread, because the fixture is a mains-powered border router sitting high and central, which is where a border router does the most good. Think twice if you are buying it primarily to add a ceiling light to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings: those platforms are claimed on Nanoleaf's own page but the connection route is documented nowhere, and 'it works with Apple Home somehow' is a thin thing to hardwire a ceiling around.
