No plan is needed to use this strip. Nanoleaf sells Nanoleaf Premium, which unlocks extra Desktop App features such as Orchestrator and Scenescapes; the strip works fully without it, and Nanoleaf's page gives no price for it.

Maintenance and offline use

• Works without the internet: Yes — the core function runs on the device or your home network. A vendor cloud may still be involved in remote access.^{[1][8][10][16]}
• A USB-C strip carrying '75 individually addressable LEDs', described by Nanoleaf as 'USB-C Plug and Play' and sized 'For Monitors up to 32"'. The 'trimmable zigzag lightstrip' is cut to fit, which is a one-way step. Beyond screen mirroring the app offers Music Sync — 'React to your audio in real time through the Nanoleaf Desktop App, with no separate microphone or additional hardware needed' — and game integration: 'Sync with Razer Chroma and Overwolf for lighting that reacts to supported in-game events'.
• Security updates: No security-update support date is on record for this model yet. We haven't yet checked whether Nanoleaf publishes one, so this is a gap in our research — not a statement about the manufacturer.

The catch

It is a Nanoleaf light that is not a smart light, and Nanoleaf says so in two sentences: 'Controlled exclusively through the Nanoleaf Desktop App for Windows and Mac. Not compatible with the Nanoleaf mobile app.' No Apple Home, no Alexa, no Google Home, no SmartThings, no Matter, no Thread — and no phone control either, from the company whose other strips are Matter devices. What you are buying is a USB-C monitor backlight with 75 addressable LEDs that mirrors what is on screen, syncs to audio, and hooks into Razer Chroma and Overwolf for games. On those terms it is exactly what it says. ⚠ Two practical consequences: the strip is trimmed to fit and that cut is permanent, and because one desktop application is the only way to control it, the product's useful life is tied to that application being maintained — a commitment Nanoleaf does not publish.

Who it's for

A desk. Specifically a Windows or Mac gaming or streaming setup with a monitor up to 32 inches, where the point is on-screen colour spilling onto the wall and reacting to games through Razer Chroma or Overwolf. It is the wrong buy for anyone who wants a light their smart home can see — including anyone who owns other Nanoleaf products and reasonably assumes this one joins them.
