Needs before it works: This is the line's real catch and it is the opposite of most Wi-Fi strips: you DO need a Matter controller. Nanoleaf reaches Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and SmartThings only through Matter, and its own manual states a Matter-compatible smart home hub is required to connect to any of them — a HomePod, Nest Hub, Echo or SmartThings hub. Without one, the strip still works, but only from the Nanoleaf app. Note also the radio: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and Nanoleaf states 5 GHz networks are not compatible.^[3]

• Trimmable along the marked cut lines but NOT extendable — measure before you buy, because a run that comes up short cannot be lengthened. Indoor only (IP20). Adhesive backing is single-shot. Firmware updates arrive through the Nanoleaf app, and Nanoleaf recommends pairing to that app before pairing to any ecosystem. LED rated 25,000 hours; 2-year warranty.
• Security updates: No security-update support date is on record for this model yet. We haven't yet checked whether Nanoleaf publishes one, so this is a gap in our research — not a statement about the manufacturer.

The catch

Every ecosystem is reached through Matter and nothing else, so a Matter controller is genuinely required — and Matter only carries on/off, brightness, colour and colour temperature, leaving Nanoleaf's scenes, music sync and screen mirroring behind the Nanoleaf app.

Who it's for

For someone who already owns a HomePod, Nest Hub, Echo or SmartThings hub and wants a local-control strip at the cheapest point in Nanoleaf's line — 50 zones is enough for accent and cove lighting. Skip it if you have no Matter controller, if your router is 5 GHz-only, or if you need a run longer than 16.4ft, since this one trims but does not extend.
