Compatibility
| Ecosystem | Support | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant | PartialPartial support — see the catch[6] | READ THIS BEFORE BUYING FOR HOME ASSISTANT: the integration is officially listed, which makes it look like a solved problem, but it is broken for accounts that have moved to Moen's new app. Home Assistant's core 'flo' integration authenticates against the legacy api.meetflo.com endpoint, and after migration that authentication fails — HA core issue 171600, opened 2026-05-20 and still open when re-checked 2026-08-20, titled "Moen Flo cannot authenticate accounts migrated to new Moen app". WHO THIS HITS, AND WHEN: Moen's own FAQ, re-read 2026-08-20, says "Currently, the migration process is optional, however it is highly recommended" — so an account that has not migrated may still authenticate today. But the same FAQ says "In the coming months, the migration process will transition from optional to required", with no date given. Treat this as a break that is coming for everyone rather than one you can avoid: buying this for Home Assistant means betting on the integration being fixed before Moen forces the migration. A community HACS component exists as a workaround but is described as targeting Moen faucets, and whether it supports the shutoff is unverified. Rated partial rather than full for exactly this reason, and rather than none because the integration does exist and still serves unmigrated accounts. |
| Google Home | WorksWorks with this ecosystem[25] | Valve control and modes, set up by searching 'Moen Smart Water' in Google Home. The caveat is the migration: Moen's own documentation describes Google support as working 'through the Moen Flo app' — the app being retired — and the post-migration status was not verified from either side. |
| Amazon Alexa | InconclusiveWe researched this and the evidence doesn't settle it — the catch explains why[8] | Genuinely contested, and Moen contradicts itself. The 900-001 spec sheet and current shop pages both say 'Works with Amazon Alexa', but Moen's own 'Enable Moen Alexa Skill' support article lists only the Smart Faucet, Smart Sprinkler Controller and Smart Sump Pump Monitor — the Flo Shutoff is absent. The likely explanation is a legacy Flo Technologies skill separate from the Moen skill, whose fate under the app migration is unverified. Recorded as unknown rather than resolved in either direction. |
| Apple Home | Doesn't workVerified: does not work with this ecosystem[9] | No native Apple Home support. The evidence is stronger than mere absence: Moen documents a HomeKit path for its Smart Showers while documenting none for the Flo line, so the omission is a deliberate product distinction rather than a gap in the documentation. A community Homebridge plugin (homebridge-flobymoen, v1.0.21, 2026-04-21) provides the only route, and it rides the same unofficial cloud API that the app migration has already broken for Home Assistant — treat it as at risk. |
| SmartThings | InconclusiveWe researched this and the evidence doesn't settle it — the catch explains why[17] | No path was found in either direction. SmartThings does not appear on Moen's integration list, and no official or community Edge driver was located. That is absence of evidence rather than a vendor statement of non-support, so this stays unknown rather than none. |
? Inconclusive means we researched that ecosystem and the evidence doesn’t settle it — the catch says why, and the sources are listed below. It is a statement about the available evidence, never a verdict on the product. A Setup Check researches your exact setup where the official sources don’t answer.
What it can do[21]
You can tell it to
- Valve
It reports
- Leak detected
- Water flow
Some of these may need a paid plan — see Subscription reality below.
Listed capabilities are what we could establish from vendor documentation. An ability missing here is unestablished — not necessarily absent.
Subscription reality[5]
◐ Works without a subscription: Yes, but material features need a plan.
- Free: Automatic shutoff (FloSense) — the core protective behaviour, Leak alerting via app, phone and email, Daily automatic MicroLeak / Health Test, Water usage, flow, pressure and temperature data, Remote valve open and close, and Home/Away/Sleep modes
- Behind a plan: Extended limited warranty to 5 years from installation, Performance Guarantee — up to $5,000 reimbursement of a homeowner's insurance deductible (from $5/mo)
- 5-year cost if you add the plan: ~$300 at $5/mo — price verified 2026-07-19
Vendor account required: Not established — we have not sourced this yet.
The value here runs BACKWARDS from what most buyers assume, and a lot of published blog copy gets it wrong: you are not paying for protection, you are paying for reimbursement if the protection fails. Moen states plainly that 'There is no monthly fee to operate your Moen Flo Shutoff and you can access all the features and your water usage data in the app for free' — automatic shutoff is free. FloProtect at $5/month buys a warranty extension and a deductible guarantee, both financial rather than functional. The fine print bites in three places: Moen's own terms state 'FloProtect is a Product warranty provided by the Company and is not insurance'; the $5,000 guarantee only pays if the device failed to notify or shut off AND was properly installed, connected to Wi-Fi, active at the time, and current on payments, with acts of nature and the initial learning period excluded; and cancelling permanently forfeits the extended warranty, which re-subscribing does not restore. Claims that FloProtect also includes live support and enhanced usage data appear in secondary sources but not in Moen's terms, and are not recorded here.
Maintenance reality[4][10][11]
- Works without the internet: Not established — we have not sourced this yet. It does not mean the product fails without the internet.
- Mains AC required continuously, from an outlet within 6 ft per the spec sheet (marketing says 10 ft; 25 ft extensions are sold). There is no built-in battery — backup is a separate purchase, and it carries recall history worth knowing: CPSC and Moen recalled ALL Flo Lithium-Ion Battery Back-Ups (model 920-001) on 2023-04-13 for a fire hazard, roughly 10,000 units sold between 2019-08-30 and 2022-11-18, after three overheating or fire reports with no injuries, and the remedy was refund only — Moen did not replace them. A different SKU (920-008, up to four hours) is sold today, but no primary source designates it as the recall replacement, so that link is not asserted. Power loss is distinct from internet loss: with no power the valve HOLDS its last position rather than failing closed, so there is no protection at all. A physical backup shutoff lever on the device body always works. The Health/MicroLeak test closes the valve and watches pressure decay for 30 seconds to 4 minutes, once daily by default and up to three times, detecting down to one drop per minute — and Moen states that disabling it may void both the product warranty and the FloProtect deductible. No filters or consumables, though well and irrigation installations need a 100-mesh wye strainer with periodic cleaning.
- Security updates: No security-update support date is on record for this model yet. We haven't yet checked whether Flo by Moen publishes one, so this is a gap in our research — not a statement about the manufacturer.
The catch
Four surprises, in order of how badly they land. The integration layer is mid-collapse: Moen retired the app the enthusiast ecosystem was built on, Home Assistant's official integration is broken for anyone who signed up or migrated recently with the bug still open, and the Homebridge route to Apple Home rides the same unofficial API — so if you are buying this to automate locally, the answer today is probably no. It is a cloud product with real local fallback, but Moen will not quite say how much: the company confirms monitoring continues and data is stored locally during a Wi-Fi outage, yet its own Wi-Fi FAQ is conspicuously silent on whether AUTOMATIC SHUTOFF still fires offline, and secondary sources contradict each other. Power loss is worse than internet loss, because the valve holds its last position rather than closing. The subscription's value is inverted from the assumption — you pay for reimbursement if protection fails, not for the protection, and cancelling forfeits the extended warranty permanently. And it cuts into your main line, so it is neither a renter product nor a reversible purchase.
Who it's for
Homeowners with an accessible main and a nearby outlet whose real fear is a burst supply line or a slow hidden drip rather than one specific appliance, and who want protection that works out of the box with no subscription and no sensor-placement guesswork. It suits anyone whose insurer offers a leak-mitigation discount, though Moen itself only offers a verification letter and points you at your insurer rather than promising anything. It is a poor fit for renters, for homes whose main is inaccessible or outdoors in freezing conditions, for homes with fire sprinklers on the same branch, for Apple Home households, and — right now especially — for Home Assistant and local-control users. Treat it as a complement rather than a substitute for point sensors: it detects supply-line anomalies, not a puddle under the dishwasher.

- [2] home-assistant/core issue 171600 'Moen Flo cannot authenticate accounts migrated to new Moen app' — read 2026-08-13, state OPEN, no fix merged. The degraded state records exactly this: Moen's own product and app function normally; what is broken is the integration surface for buyers who chose the product for it. — third-party-tracker research, verified 2026-08-13Backs: Service status

SIZE CONFLICT RECORDED: the same spec sheet says the device must be installed on a 0.75 inch line then parenthetically '(can be installed on 1.25 inch diameter or smaller)'; separately shop.moen.com describes the 900-002 as '1-1/2 inch or smaller' while Moen Professional, Home Depot and the product line name all say 1.25 inch. - [5] shop.moen.com/pages/flo-smart-water-monitor-support states verbatim 'There is no monthly fee to operate your Moen Flo Shutoff and you can access all the features and your water usage data in the app for free.' solutions.moen.com FloProtect enable/cancel article states $5/month, month-to-month. The FloProtect terms and conditions give the two benefits (5-year extended warranty, up to $5,000 deductible reimbursement) and state 'FloProtect is a Product warranty provided by the Company and is not insurance', with conditions requiring proper installation, an active Wi-Fi connection, current payments, and excluding acts of nature and the learning period, plus permanent forfeiture of the extended warranty on cancellation. — vendor-page and vendor-terms research, verified 2026-07-19Backs: Subscription
- [6] home-assistant.io/integrations/flo/ documents the integration as Cloud Polling with a binary sensor, sensors and a valve switch. github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/171600, opened 2026-05-20 and re-checked OPEN on 2026-08-20, reports authentication failing against https://api.meetflo.com/api/v1/users/auth for migrated accounts on HA Core 2026.5.3 — the issue's own title is "Moen Flo cannot authenticate accounts migrated to new Moen app", which is the scope. ⚠ CORRECTED 2026-08-20 (16 #365): this entry previously read "Because Moen made migration mandatory as of 2026-05-01, this affects new setups generally." MOEN'S OWN FAQ DOES NOT SAY THAT AND DID NOT ON RE-READ: migration is "currently optional, however highly recommended", becoming required "in the coming months" with no date, and no 2026-05-01 deactivation appears anywhere on the page. The date was asserted by this record, not by the vendor, and we were four months past it while Moen still called migration optional. The breakage is real and unchanged; only its SCOPE was wrong — migrated accounts, not everyone. — counterparty-source research, verified 2026-08-20Backs: Home Assistant compatibility
- [7] solutions.moen.com's Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff FAQ, re-read 2026-08-20, in Moen's own words: "Currently, the migration process is optional, however it is highly recommended. In the coming months, the migration process will transition from optional to required." On the app's retirement: "While there isn't a specific date defined for when the Flo by Moen app will be removed from the app stores, the intention is for this to occur in 2026." Data: "All of your Flo device's and their historical data and configurations will be carried forward to the new Moen Smart Water Network app." Subscriptions: "Your FloProtect subscription will still remain active and can be managed via the http://User.MeetFlo.com portal." ⚠ CORRECTED 2026-08-20 (16 #365): this entry previously stated that the legacy app "deactivates 2026-05-01" and that migration had already "moved from optional to required". Neither is supported by the FAQ this entry names, on a re-read four months after that date. The carry-over facts it recorded — data, configurations and FloProtect surviving migration — ARE confirmed and are unchanged. — first-party vendor support FAQ, plain fetch, verified 2026-08-20
- [8] The 900-001 spec sheet and current shop.moen.com pages state 'Works with Amazon Alexa', while solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/Enable_Moen_Alexa_Skill states the skill covers 'currently the Moen Smart Faucet, Smart Sprinkler Controller, and Smart Sump Pump Monitor' — omitting the Flo Shutoff. A separate legacy Flo Technologies skill exists. Unresolved in either direction. — vendor-page and vendor-support research, verified 2026-07-19Backs: Amazon Alexa compatibility
- [9] solutions.moen.com integration-setup documentation enumerates Ring (US only), Google Home, Control4 and Alarm.com with no HomeKit path for Flo, while Moen separately documents HomeKit support for its Smart Showers — so the absence is a product distinction, not a documentation gap. github.com/haywirecoder/homebridge-flobymoen (v1.0.21, 2026-04-21) provides an unofficial route and self-describes as using the unofficial cloud API. — vendor-support and counterparty-source research, verified 2026-07-19Backs: Apple Home compatibility
- [10] solutions.moen.com Wi-Fi FAQ confirms the device 'is Wi-Fi enabled, not Wi-Fi dependent', continues monitoring and stores usage data locally during an outage, and that 'Real-time alerts and remote control features require an active internet connection'. IT DOES NOT STATE whether automatic shutoff still fires offline, and secondary sources actively contradict each other on the point — some say the shutoff logic is on-device, at least one says unusual-usage detection and auto-shutoff require internet. Recorded as unresolved rather than decided, because it is the single most consequential open question for this category. Behaviour if Moen's cloud were discontinued is likewise undocumented. — vendor-support research, verified 2026-07-19Backs: Maintenance
- [11] cpsc.gov recall notice (2023-04-13) plus Moen's own recall page — ALL Flo Lithium-Ion Battery Back-Ups, model 920-001, roughly 10,000 units sold 2019-08-30 to 2022-11-18, recalled for fire hazard after three overheating or fire reports with no injuries, remedy refund only. The currently sold 920-008 is a different SKU; NO primary source designates it as the recall replacement, so that connection is not asserted here. — regulator-source research, verified 2026-07-19Backs: Maintenance
- [12] solutions.moen.com automatic health test article — the device 'will close its valve', running 30 seconds to 4 minutes, once daily by default and configurable up to three times, auto-cancelling and retrying if water is used, detecting down to one drop per minute, and stating 'If the Automatic MicroLeak Test is disabled, your product warranty and FloProtect deductible… may be void.' — vendor-support research, verified 2026-07-19
- [13] solutions.moen.com Flo insurance verification letter page — Moen offers a verification letter and directs buyers to 'Contact your home insurance company for details on any discounts or rebates', making no discount claim of its own — vendor-support research, verified 2026-07-19
- [14] Moen's own Smart Water Detector is the documented path for point-leak-triggered shutoff. Of the third-party routes, only Control4 is confirmed: solutions.moen.com integration documentation describes a 'custom leak alarm with automatic shutoff', and that is a dealer-installed channel. Ring can display and control the valve (US only) and Alarm.com can open and close it, but whether a Ring or Alarm.com leak sensor can TRIGGER closure through routines is unverified in both cases and is not asserted. Home Assistant would be the natural cross-brand bridge and is currently broken. For a DIY buyer today, assume third-party sensors cannot close this valve. — vendor-support research, verified 2026-07-19
- [15] shop.moen.com support page — Moen 'recommend[s] using a plumbing professional for installation, since the Moen Flo Shutoff is a precision-engineered device and installation requires removing a section of your main water pipe.' It installs after the meter, main shutoff and PRV on the cold main, is prohibited on piping branching to residential fire sprinklers and in NFPA 70 hazardous locations, and needs ambient temperatures between 32 °F and 140 °F. The spec sheet's 1-year warranty states no professional-installation condition, but the full warranty document was not retrieved, so no claim is made that professional installation is or is not required for warranty; FloProtect's guarantee separately does require the product be 'properly installed'. — vendor-page and vendor-spec-sheet research, verified 2026-07-19
- [16] Matter is not named on Moen's spec sheet, support pages or product pages, and no Moen entry surfaced in a csa-iot.org certified-products search — but that search was explicitly non-exhaustive against 1,533 result pages, so this is recorded as no evidence found rather than as a confirmed absence. — registry research, verified 2026-07-19Backs: Protocols

- [18] All three SKUs live with prices on shop.moen.com 2026-07-19. The first-sold year was NOT established from any primary source and is deliberately left unknown rather than guessed — the commonly cited Amazon ASIN is a recycled listing and an unreliable proxy. No second generation w — migrated hand stamp, verified 2026-07-19Backs: Market availability
- [19] Moen is replacing the legacy 'Flo by Moen' app with the 'Moen Smart Water Network' app. Per Moen's own FAQ, re-read 2026-08-20: migration is "currently optional, however highly recommended" and "in the coming months" becomes required; there is "no specific date defined" for the old app's removal from app stores, with the intention being 2026. FloProtect subscriptions survive migration and are still managed at user.meetflo.com, and device data and configurations carry forward. ⚠ CORRECTED 2026-08-20 (16 #365): the migrated text asserted the old app "deactivating 2026-05-01" and migration already being required. Moen publishes neither. The service IS in transition and the record's `degraded` state is unchanged — what was wrong was the certainty and the date, not the direction. — first-party vendor support FAQ, plain fetch, verified 2026-08-20Backs: Service status

- [22] Moen's own specification sheet for the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff, model 900-001 (Rev. 9/22), read in full 2026-08-20. Its Installation Notes enumerate the requirements: "Requires electrical outlet (100-240VAC-50/60 Hz) with continuous power within 6 feet of device"; "Requires WiFi network (WLAN connectivity/IEEE 802.11bgn, 2.4 GHz range)"; "Smartphone (iPhone or Android) with installed app required to receive alarm notifications"; plus plumbing conditions on line diameter and placement. Operation is described as "WiFi enabled device for smartphone connectivity", and the platform line reads "Works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT and Control4". Included with product: "3/4\" inch-NPT threaded brass tailpieces (x2), AC adapter (12 VDC, 100-240VAC-50/60 Hz) with 10' cable (x1), spare o-rings (x2), installation spacer (x1), 5/16\" hex key (x1)". — vendor-page research (BQ-191 provider backfill, population (b): the `hubs` axis), verified 2026-08-20Backs: Required hub or bridge

Verbatim, the whole of the answer: "Moen Flo Shutoff's have integrations with third-party smart home devices such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Ring and Control." It names the product by both names in the same article — "the Moen Flo Shutoff, which was formerly known as the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff system" — so the scope is this record's product and not a sibling. This sits alongside the 900-001 specification sheet already cited on this record, whose platform line reads "Works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT and Control4": two first-party Moen surfaces, both naming Google. — vendor-page research (BQ-322 batch 4 — claim-coverage cells, first-party re-read through tools/lib/gated-fetch.mjs), verified 2026-09-03Backs: Google Home compatibility
Where sources disagree
Where two sources we consider reliable say different things, we publish both positions and what we recorded, rather than quietly picking one.
Amazon Alexa compatibility
- Moen 900-001 spec sheet and current shop.moen.com product pages (as of 2026-07-19): Both state 'Works with Amazon Alexa' for the Flo Smart Water Shutoff.
- Moen support article, Enable Moen Alexa Skill (as of 2026-07-19): States the skill covers 'currently the Moen Smart Faucet, Smart Sprinkler Controller, and Smart Sump Pump Monitor' -- the Flo Shutoff is omitted from that list.
We publish: unknown
Both statements are Moen's own, and on a question this specific neither a spec sheet nor a support article clearly outranks the other. An older Flo Technologies Alexa skill also still exists, which could explain either answer, so we could not rule either one out. We published "unknown" rather than take the more flattering claim at face value.
