Compatibility
| Ecosystem | Support | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Requires a Lutron Smart Hub; the switch itself has no standard radio. |
| Google Home | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Requires a Lutron Smart Hub; the switch itself has no standard radio. |
| Apple Home | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Lutron states the Smart Hub contains Apple Home technology — the hub provides it, not the switch. |
| SmartThings | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Requires a Lutron Smart Hub plus a SmartThings account. Caseta scenes cannot be imported into SmartThings. |
| Home Assistant | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Official lutron_caseta integration with local push; fan speed control is an explicitly supported device type and appears as a fan entity. Requires a Smart Hub or Bridge PRO plus generated certificates. Note Lutron does not list Home Assistant on its own works-with page — support is documented only from the Home Assistant side. |
Protocols: CLEAR-CONNECT
Needs before it works: Yes for anything smart. The switch carries only Lutron's proprietary Clear Connect RF and no standard radio, so every ecosystem integration happens at the hub. It works as a manual wall control with no hub and pairs directly with Pico remotes and Caseta motion sensors (up to 10 devices), but the Lutron app, remote access, voice assistants, and all platform integrations require a Lutron Smart Hub or Smart Hub PRO. RF range is 60 ft line-of-sight, 30 ft through walls.
Subscription reality
✓ Works without a subscription: Yes.
No subscription appears on the product page, the works-with page, or the specification submittal. Established by absence across three manufacturer surfaces rather than by an affirmative statement.
Maintenance reality
- Cloud dependence: No — core function survives without the vendor's cloud
- Neutral connection required — the load table lists PD-FSQN as requiring neutral, and it lacks the two-wire capability of Lutron's PD-5WS-DV and PD-6WCL. 120 V 50/60 Hz, single permanent split-capacitor motor, 0.1 A minimum to 1.5 A maximum. Requires a 1-gang wallbox with 2.5 in minimum depth, deeper than Lutron's other models need. Four speeds plus off with a user-defined favourite. Single-pole only. Indoor, 32-104 F.
The catch
The compatible-fan list is narrow, and a hub is mandatory. Lutron's specification submittal excludes fans with integrated speed or light control modules, DC motor fans, fans with remote controls, and bathroom or kitchen exhaust fans — which rules out a large share of ceiling fans sold today, including most bundled with a handheld remote. It controls the fan motor only, not the light, and it is single-pole only.
Who it's for
Households already running a Lutron Smart Hub who have an AC permanent split-capacitor ceiling fan without a bundled remote, and who want the reliability of Lutron's dedicated RF rather than Wi-Fi. Not a fit for hubless setups, DC-motor fans, or anyone needing 3-way wiring.
