⚠ Similar names, different products: A kit and an extension are not the same purchase, and LIFX sells both at 40 inches. The kit recorded here includes the strip, the Wi-Fi controller and the power supply; the 40" extension is strip only and needs an existing kit to plug into. LIFX also sells 80" and 118" kits under the same SuperColor Lightstrip name, and a separate Neon Flex line that is a silicone tube rather than a strip. Everyday is LIFX's cheaper colour line and is not this.

Compatibility

Needs before it works: No hub or bridge. The included Wi-Fi controller is what joins your home network, on the 2.4GHz band, and the strip plugs into it. A Matter controller only enters the picture if you pair the strip into Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings as a Matter device instead of through LIFX's cloud connection — LIFX's own instructions offer both routes and say only the Matter one needs a controller for that platform.^[4]

No plan and no device limit. LIFX states the app "supports unlimited devices on a single account with no per-device or per-location fees", and that its platform connections are "all included at no extra cost".

Maintenance reality

• Works without the internet: Partly — some of it keeps working and some of it does not. See the detail below.^[6]
• Indoor only — LIFX says the strip "isn't suitable for use under dust or moisture" and should be kept away from bathrooms and outdoor areas. It can be cut between zones, but LIFX states a cut section cannot be reconnected or extended and that cutting voids the warranty. Extending is the supported path instead: extension packs and cables take a run to 10m (33ft) with a 30W ceiling. The adhesive backing is a one-shot mount like every strip of this kind. Rated 700 lumens, 1500K to 9000K, colour rendering index 82, 8.0W in use and 0.5W on standby, at 120-240V. Two-year hardware warranty.
• Security updates: LIFX states its security-update commitment for this model as a period rather than a date: a minimum of 5 years from the end of manufacturing of each hardware generation (declared worldwide — the document says it applies everywhere). That is a floor measured from a starting point the manufacturer sets — a launch or a purchase — rather than a fixed end date, so it cannot be placed on a calendar here. We record the commitment as the manufacturer states it, in our words, rather than converting it into a date it did not give. This is a published commitment, not a gap in our research.^[7]

The catch

Matter is not on the strip when it arrives. LIFX says Matter comes to this product as a free firmware update through the LIFX app, while Apple Home works straight from the pairing code in the manual — so the box you open is a HomeKit-and-LIFX-app device until you update it. The strip is also 2.4GHz only on its own spec sheet, even though a general question on the same store says LIFX products join 2.4GHz or 5GHz networks. And the flexibility has a hard edge: LIFX states that cutting the strip voids the warranty and that a cut section cannot be reconnected or extended, so a run trimmed too short is finished — extension packs, not scissors, are the supported way to change length.

Who it's for

For accent runs you can measure before you buy — under a cabinet, behind a desk, along a shelf — where 40 inches and eight colour zones are enough and there is a socket nearby for the controller. It suits someone who wants colour without adding a bridge, and someone on Apple Home in particular, since this is the LIFX product that joins Apple Home with no cloud account and no firmware update first. Look elsewhere if the run is outdoors or anywhere damp, if you want a seamless neon-style glow rather than a strip with visible points of light, or if you expect to cut it to fit and keep the warranty.
