Leviton's own single listing carries BOTH identifiers: its web address ends 'decora-smart-wi-fi-tamper-resistant-outlet-2nd-gen-d215r-1bw' while its title reads 'Decora Smart Wi-Fi Tamper-Resistant Outlet (2nd Gen), D215R-1RW'. Leviton is equating the two in one place, so this is not a price stitched together from two different documents. ⛔ COLOUR WAS THE OBVIOUS TRAP AND WE CHECKED IT rather than waving past — we have been bitten before by a product priced differently by colour. It does not apply: the listing has exactly ONE option, and Leviton's own description sells colour as an accessory rather than a separate product — 'six color options' delivered by 'optional DSRKT color change kits in Ivory, Black, Gray, Brown and Light Almond'. There is one of these a buyer can purchase from Leviton and it costs $34.99. Leviton's own product page still shows no price, which is why we needed the store at all.)

No plan or paid tier appears anywhere in Leviton's product-data sheet or instruction sheet, including around scheduling, scenes, Away mode and auto-shutoff — the features a maker would normally put behind a fee. We record no subscription on that basis. The distinction that matters to a buyer: a free My Leviton account is required for SOME households and not for all. Leviton's sheet does list it among what you need to make the outlet work — but the same sheet's setup section says the outlet 'can be connected to the My Leviton service, Apple HomeKit, or both', and its HomeKit procedure sets the device up by scanning a code without naming a Leviton account at any step. So: a HomeKit-only household needs no Leviton account, while Alexa and Google households do, because Leviton states 'For voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, you will need to set up the device with My Leviton'. Either way this needs an account at most, never a subscription — the account section above carries the detail. Leviton's published per-account ceilings are generous rather than restrictive: up to 99 devices, 50 rooms, 50 activities and 50 schedules per home, and up to 20 homes per account.

Maintenance reality^[3][4]

• Batteries: None — there is no battery and no battery backup. This is a receptacle wired to household line voltage: Leviton's own specification rates it 15 A at 120 VAC, 60 Hz, and its installation guide has the Line, Neutral and Ground wires land on named screw terminals inside the wall box.
• Works without the internet: Partly — some of it keeps working and some of it does not. See the detail below.^[5][20]
• Two tamper-resistant 15 A, 120 VAC NEMA 5-15R outlets in one duplex body, and only the TOP one is smart — Leviton's wording is 'top controlled, bottom always on', with the always-on half intended for chargers. Ratings (top outlet): General Use 15 A 120 VAC 60 Hz; LED/CFL/Electronic Ballast 5 A; Incandescent/Halogen 1500 W; Magnetic Ballast 15 A; Motor 3/4 HP. Wiring: the box must have Line, Neutral and Ground; #14-12 AWG for hot and neutral, terminals torqued to 14 in-lbs, copper or copper-clad only. Vendor cautions carried verbatim because they are the ones that bite: 'WARNING: Do not use with aluminum wire', 'Installation in metal wall boxes or with metal wallplates may result in poor RF performance', and 'For indoor use only'. Network: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, WPA/WPA2/WPA3 or open, Bluetooth v5.0. ⚠ Leviton's own two documents disagree about the Wi-Fi standard, so both are given here rather than one being quietly chosen: the instruction sheet that ships with the outlet says '802.11 b/g/n networks - 2.4GHz only', while the later product-data sheet (rev. January 2022) says '802.11 g/n @ 2.4GHz'. Only the legacy 802.11b part is in question. Both documents agree the radio is 2.4 GHz and nothing else, which is the half that decides whether it will join your network. Environment: 0–40 °C (32–104 °F), 10–90% non-condensing. App: My Leviton on iOS 12.0+ or Android 8.0+. Memory maintains on/off state through minor power fluctuations, and an integrated button with a vanishing feedback light gives manual control. Up to 3 wire-free DAWSC Anywhere Switch Companions can add wall-switch control of the switched outlet; six DSRKT colour-change kits fit it. Standards: UL 60730-1, CSA E60730-1, NOM, Wi-Fi CERTIFIED, FCC Part 15 Class B. Two-year limited warranty. Leviton states installation 'requires electrical knowledge. If you are unsure of any steps, consult an electrician.'
• Security updates: No security-update support date is on record for this model yet. We haven't yet checked whether Leviton publishes one, so this is a gap in our research — not a statement about the manufacturer.

The catch

Leviton's own two sources disagree about whether this outlet supports Matter, and the disagreement runs the direction that costs a buyer money. The D215R product page states 'MATTER: Firmware update available via the My Leviton app to enable Matter connectivity' — but Leviton's own Matter support article names the eligible 2nd Gen devices explicitly as 'the D26HD Dimmer, D215S Switch, D215P Mini Plug-In Switch, and D23LP Mini Plug-In Dimmer', and the outlet is absent from that list; Leviton's press release on the same firmware speaks of dimmers, switches and smart plugs, again not outlets. So this record does not claim Matter. If you need Matter, do not buy this outlet on the strength of the product page. The rest of the trade-offs are ordinary and knowable: only the top outlet is smart (the bottom is always on), the Alexa and Google paths run through Leviton's cloud while HomeKit stays local, a free My Leviton account is required either way, it needs a 2.4 GHz network and a box with line, neutral and ground, and it is indoor-only — with Leviton warning that metal boxes or metal wallplates can degrade the radio. Three-way-style control of the switched outlet costs extra: up to three wire-free DAWSC companions.

Who it's for

A fit for a household that wants one smart, tamper-resistant receptacle in a shallow box, controlled from Apple Home natively without any Matter project — plus Alexa or Google if wanted — and that is comfortable wiring a receptacle or hiring it out. The always-on bottom outlet suits a spot that also charges phones, and the 3/4 HP motor rating covers loads a plug-in module usually cannot. Look elsewhere if you need Matter today, if both outlets need to be switchable, if you want control that does not depend on a vendor account, or if the box has aluminum wiring. Home Assistant users should treat support as unverified for this specific model.
