Compatibility
| Ecosystem | Support | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | No Alexa-specific listing exists; coverage rests on IKEA's blanket statement of compatibility with smart systems from Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung, via standard Matter with a Thread border router on that platform. |
| Google Home | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Same basis: IKEA's blanket Matter-systems statement naming Google; no Google-specific listing. Thread border router on the Google side required. |
| Apple Home | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Same basis: IKEA's blanket Matter-systems statement naming Apple; no Apple-specific listing. Thread border router on the Apple side required. |
| SmartThings | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | Same basis: IKEA's blanket Matter-systems statement naming Samsung; no SmartThings-specific listing. Thread border router on the Samsung side required. |
| Home Assistant | WorksWorks with this ecosystem | IKEA does not name Home Assistant. The path is HA's official Matter integration (local push), which supports certified Matter devices generically; there is no KAJPLATS-specific listing on either side. A community Zigbee2MQTT path also exists via the bulb's IKEA-undocumented Zigbee fallback mode. |
Protocols: MATTER · THREAD
Needs before it works: Matter controller plus a Thread border router before phone or app control works — IKEA's page states you need a Thread Border Router, its DIRIGERA hub the stated example, and IKEA support names any Matter-compatible hub (DIRIGERA, Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home and more). A no-hub path exists for physical control only: a BILRESA remote pairs directly with the bulb, and starter kits ship pre-paired.
Subscription reality
✓ Works without a subscription: Yes.
No subscription referenced on the IKEA US product pages, IKEA's smart-product support policy, or the launch press release.
Maintenance reality
- Cloud dependence: No — core function survives without the vendor's cloud
- Matter over Thread runs locally; IKEA's support policy states smart products keep working, including on local networks without internet, after software support ends. Bluetooth is the commissioning radio (CSA cert). Four selectable white temperatures (2200/2700/4000/6500 K) plus 40 fixed colors; dimming is built into the bulb, and IKEA support states it does not work with wall or dimming switches. A Zigbee fallback pairing mode exists (power-cycle sequence, supported by community tooling like Zigbee2MQTT) but IKEA documents it nowhere, so it is not listed as a protocol. Support duration: at least 5 years after purchase per IKEA policy, conditional on pairing with a DIRIGERA hub or TRADFRI gateway; the policy does not address the term for Matter devices used only with a third-party controller.
The catch
Matter over Thread only, as far as IKEA documents: without a Thread border router a phone cannot control it (a directly-paired BILRESA remote is the one hubless path), and the built-in dimming means it must not be put on a wall dimmer. The color version costs a third more than the white-spectrum bulb in the same 1100 lm globe.
Who it's for
Thread-equipped Matter households that want full-color bulbs at a fraction of premium-brand prices, and DIRIGERA homes replacing or extending the discontinued TRADFRI line.
