Compatibility

EcosystemSupportThe catch
Amazon AlexaWorksWorks with this ecosystem[5][7]Alexa is built into the thermostat itself — microphone, speaker, two-way talk, and music streaming via Spotify Connect and Amazon Music, so it doubles as an Echo in the hallway. It can also send intercom announcements to a HomePod mini or an Alexa device elsewhere in the house.
Google HomeWorksWorks with this ecosystem[7]Full support
Apple HomeWorksWorks with this ecosystem[5][7]HomeKit is native — ecobee lists 'Apple HomeKit' among the platforms the thermostat works with directly. THE ASYMMETRY WORTH KNOWING BEFORE YOU BUY: Alexa is built INTO this thermostat, with a microphone, speaker and two-way talk; Siri is not. ecobee's own page says enabling Siri means pairing an Apple HomePod or HomePod mini, and that 'Accessing Siri on this accessory requires iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 or later and a HomePod or HomePod mini with software version 15 or later.' So the voice assistant you get in the hallway for $259.99 is Amazon's; an Apple household that wants the same thing at the thermostat pays for a HomePod as well.
SmartThingsWorksWorks with this ecosystem[7]Full support
Home AssistantWorksWorks with this ecosystem[8]Official but cloud-polling: Home Assistant talks to ecobee's servers, not the thermostat locally, so an ecobee outage takes the integration down. Setup got easier — since HA 2026.3 an ecobee.com login is enough and the old developer-API-key requirement is now optional rather than mandatory. Broad coverage when connected: climate, sensors, humidifier, switches, numbers, binary sensors, notifications and weather. Local-only alternative: pair via HA's HomeKit Device integration instead.

Protocols: WIFI[7]

Needs before it works: No hub for the thermostat itself — it joins your Wi-Fi directly and every ecosystem below reaches it through ecobee's cloud or as a native HomeKit accessory. ONE ECOSYSTEM-SPECIFIC EXCEPTION, and it is easy to misread: the thermostat has Alexa built in, but Siri is not on the device. ecobee's own page states that enabling Siri means pairing with an Apple HomePod or HomePod mini, and that 'Accessing Siri on this accessory requires iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 or later and a HomePod or HomePod mini with software version 15 or later.' So an Apple household that wants voice control at the thermostat is buying a HomePod on top; an Alexa household is not.[3]

What it can do[11]

You can tell it to

  • Target temperature

It reports

  • Temperature reading
  • Humidity reading
  • Presence detected

Listed capabilities are what we could establish from vendor documentation. An ability missing here is unestablished — not necessarily absent.

Subscription reality[4]

✓ Works without a subscription: Yes.

Vendor account required: Not established — we have not sourced this yet.

No plan is required for anything this record claims. Thermostat control, scheduling, the bundled SmartSensor and remote app access are all unpaid, and ecobee's energy-optimisation layer eco+ 'comes automatically enabled' at no cost, covering Schedule Assistant, Smart Home & Away, Adjust Temperature for Humidity, Time of Use, Community Energy Savings and Pause when Open. The paid ladder is ecobee Smart Security and it is about SECURITY DEVICES, not this thermostat: Core is free with security devices, Plus is $5/month or $50/year, Advanced is $10/month or $100/year, and what the money buys is camera package detection, 30-day camera event history, smoke-alarm listening and professional-monitoring compatibility. Named so nobody has to guess later: a bundle purchase may include one year of Smart Security Advanced, and ecobee also sells an optional air-filter subscription — neither is a condition of the thermostat working.

Maintenance reality[3]

The catch

Install needs a C-wire, or the Power Extender Kit that ships in the box — either way, budget 20 extra minutes at the furnace.

Who it's for

The works-with-everything pick: room sensors, air quality, all five ecosystems.
