Needs before it works: No hub for the thermostat itself — it joins your Wi-Fi directly and every ecosystem below reaches it through ecobee's cloud or as a native HomeKit accessory. ONE ECOSYSTEM-SPECIFIC EXCEPTION, and it is easy to misread: the thermostat has Alexa built in, but Siri is not on the device. ecobee's own page states that enabling Siri means pairing with an Apple HomePod or HomePod mini, and that 'Accessing Siri on this accessory requires iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 or later and a HomePod or HomePod mini with software version 15 or later.' So an Apple household that wants voice control at the thermostat is buying a HomePod on top; an Alexa household is not.^[3]

No plan is required for anything this record claims. Thermostat control, scheduling, the bundled SmartSensor and remote app access are all unpaid, and ecobee's energy-optimisation layer eco+ 'comes automatically enabled' at no cost, covering Schedule Assistant, Smart Home & Away, Adjust Temperature for Humidity, Time of Use, Community Energy Savings and Pause when Open. The paid ladder is ecobee Smart Security and it is about SECURITY DEVICES, not this thermostat: Core is free with security devices, Plus is $5/month or $50/year, Advanced is $10/month or $100/year, and what the money buys is camera package detection, 30-day camera event history, smoke-alarm listening and professional-monitoring compatibility. Named so nobody has to guess later: a bundle purchase may include one year of Smart Security Advanced, and ecobee also sells an optional air-filter subscription — neither is a condition of the thermostat working.

Maintenance reality^[3]

• Works without the internet: Not established — we have not sourced this yet. It does not mean the product fails without the internet.
• C-wire or the Power Extender Kit — and the PEK is IN THE BOX, which is the fact that decides whether this thermostat is buyable for a no-C-wire home. ecobee lists the box contents as the thermostat, mounting plate, SmartSensor with stand and adhesive wall-mount, quick-start guide, wire labels, screws and drywall anchors, trim plate, and the Power Extender Kit. The thermostat needs 24VAC wired power, and in ecobee's words the 'Power Extender Kit enables you to reliably power your thermostat without having to run a fifth wire'. No batteries. Budget the extra time: the PEK is installed at the HVAC equipment, not at the wall plate.
• Security updates: No security-update support date is on record for this model yet. We haven't yet checked whether ecobee publishes one, so this is a gap in our research — not a statement about the manufacturer.

The catch

Install needs a C-wire, or the Power Extender Kit that ships in the box — either way, budget 20 extra minutes at the furnace.
