The free tier here is genuinely more generous than Ring's on the same shelf, and the difference is what gets detected rather than whether video is live: ecobee's Core tier costs $0 and includes 'Motion and Person Detection' — 'Get instant, accurate alerts when human activity is detected in Activity Zones, while ignoring pets and vehicles' — plus two-way talk and 24/7 live view. Smart Security Plus at $5/month adds package detection, snapshot-rich notifications and 30-day video history; Advanced at $10/month is the same feature set with unlimited cameras. ⚠ The real ceiling is storage, not features: there is no microSD slot and no local recording path named anywhere on the page, so an unsubscribed unit retains nothing — the same trap this shelf documents on the Ring and Arlo cloud-only doorbells, and the opposite of the eufy/Reolink/Aqara local-storage pattern.

The catch

Two things the spec sheet buries. The Apple badge carries a footnote — 'Apple Home Secure video is not supported' — so an Apple household gets the doorbell in the Home app without the HomeKit Secure Video recording it probably came for. And there is no local storage: no microSD slot, no NAS path, nothing but ecobee's cloud, so the free tier alerts you well but keeps no clip you can go back to. On the upside, the free tier is genuinely useful — person detection with activity zones costs $0 here, where competitors paywall it.

Who it's for

A household that wants an unusually tall view of the doorstep — 175° vertically, so packages against the door and visitors head-to-toe — and that values free person detection over owning its footage. It fits Alexa or Google homes most cleanly, and existing ecobee thermostat owners consolidating on one app. Apple households wanting HomeKit Secure Video should look at this shelf's Aqara records instead.
