Unusually for this category, the third-party integrations are NOT paywalled — an older claim that Abode gates integrations behind a plan is stale. What is gated is automations involving third-party devices, plus cellular backup, which sits in the Pro tier rather than Standard.

- Cloud dependence: Yes — a server shutdown would degrade or brick this device
- Abode publishes no runtime figure for the hub's backup battery. Ethernet is required for initial setup, Wi-Fi is supported afterwards. Optional 4G cellular backup is Pro-tier only. Notifications, timeline, stored clips and monitoring are cloud-served; whether a local-only operating mode exists is not documented either way.
The catch
Abode sells two hubs with nearly identical names, and the cheaper one drops the two things Abode is known for. The $150 Abode Security Kit has no Apple Home and no Zigbee or Z-Wave — its own product page says "This hub is not compatible with HomeKit" — while the Smart Security Kit here has all three. Abode's own FAQ muddies it further by calling the better hub "a Security Hub." Shopping on price lands you on the kit that cannot do the thing you came for. Second: automations do not run at all on the free tier, and cellular backup — the thing that keeps an alarm alive when the internet is cut — is Pro-tier only.
Who it's for
Apple Home households, which have almost no other alarm option, and anyone who wants Zigbee or Z-Wave sensors on the same hub as their alarm. Check the hub name on the box before buying.
